LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

DRX, a leading provider of healthcare comparison tools, technology and data, announced today that the company is expanding its coverage of specialty drugs in its popular DrugCompare technology.

DRX DrugCompare is the leading platform for identifying lower cost drug alternatives for prescription drugs. This technology provides the most comprehensive set of therapeutically equivalent drug mappings available, offering dose-specific price comparisons for branded, generic and therapeutic equivalents of prescription drugs. The Lower-Cost Alternatives data in DrugCompare is the most widely-used comparative effectiveness solution in the US. It is used by health plans, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), drugstore chains, online pharmacies, consulting firms, electronic medical records providers (EMRs) and e-Prescribing vendors. In the area of Specialty medications, DRX currently covers therapeutic alternatives for Anemia, Hepatitis C, and Multiple Sclerosis.

The Specialty drug spend continues to be a major factor in our clients overall drug spend, so DRX is working hard to continue to expand our coverage in this area. By the end of 2012, we plan to add at least 4 more Specialty medications to our suite. These include medications for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, said Toby Rogers, COO of DRX. In 2013, we will focus on enhancing our alternatives database for the #1 specialty condition, Inflammatory Conditions, which includes Psoriasis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.1

Specialty medications currently represent about 20% of total drug spend, and by 2014 that number is expected to increase to 25%.2 The price trend in specialty medications has been in the double digits for the last several years3. DRX currently covers five specialty classes, which include 24 Specialty medications from three Specialty conditions. By the end of 2012, that will increase to six Specialty classes, which will include 28 Specialty medications from four Specialty conditions.
