BabyGaga had the chance to speak with EmBeba's co-founder and CEO Thai-Anh Hoang on how parents can soothe skin irritations in babies.

In general, babies have skin that is more sensitive when compared that of older children and adults. But some babies have especially sensitive skin, and even more, may be more prone to developing skin reactions or irritations, such as eczema or prolonged diaper rash. As such, they may require products made specifically for infants with sensitive skin so as to not only worsen any existing irritation, but to act as a preventative measure.

When founding EmBeba, co-founder and CEO Thai-Anh Hoang had this specifically in mind. Her own child suffered from severe diaper rash and eczema, so she wanted to develop skincare products for infants that would help soothe the break-up. This led Hoang to develop the Dont be Rash Diaper + All Over Balm, which helps keep skin sensitivities at bay. BabyGaga recently had the chance to speak with Hoang to learn more about the link between diaper rash, eczema, and other skin sensitivities, and the precautions parents can take to reduce their childs skin irritations.

Alexandra Sakellariou for BabyGaga (BG): EmBeba is an independent, family-run skincare company. To start off with, can you tell us the story behind the founding of EmBeba?

Thai-Anh Hoang (TH): As someone who has dealt with eczema and skin sensitivity my whole life, it wasnt a surprise when my daughter inherited the same dryness and discomfort. On a trip to visit family in the Bosnian countryside, my daughter developed a terrible diaper rash! Ive dealt with this numerous times before, yet nothing seemed to help every time she had an outbreak. It was extremely stressful having a child in such discomfort in a foreign country, but thankfully, a family member gifted us a traditional moisturizing bar filled with ingredients that had been used for generations, and it completely healed my daughters rash! At that moment, I knew I had to share this miracle with other families who were also struggling with finding a solution for their childs skin sensitivities.

(BG): Are babies with eczema more likely to suffer from diaper rash? Why is this so?

(TH): Sadly, yes. Babies with eczema have reactive and sensitive skin, which makes them more likely to develop diaper rashes.

(BG): What other side effects can eczema cause in babies?

(TH): As someone who has dealt with eczema her whole life, and now having a toddler who also suffers from it, I can say with confidence that eczema can definitely affect ones quality of life. You have to be extra careful, as side effects of eczema can lead to bacterial infections of the skin because of a compromised skin barrier. Children with eczema are also prone to the risk of the trifecta -- eczema, asthma and seasonal allergies -- which is exactly what I have. They also have a higher chance of food allergies. In fact, my daughter has eczema, seasonal allergies and dairy intolerance.

(BG): EmBeba just came out with its Dont Be Rash Diaper Balm. For parents with babies with eczema or other skin sensitivities, why is it important to use a diaper rash cream specifically formulated for problematic skin conditions?

(TH): Due to how reactive babies with skin sensitivity can be, its essential to use a product with limited ingredients. As a consumer, you always want to check the labels to understand what youre putting on you or your childs skin. At EmBeba, its written into our high standard of CLEAN to use limited ingredients and no filler ingredients. We also list every single ingredient and provide a reason on why a specific ingredient is in our formulation to provide transparency and give parents peace of mind on why an ingredient is in the products and what exactly it does to help ones skin condition(s).

(BG): What are the main ingredients in the Dont Be Rash Diaper Balm that specifically helps treat eczema?

(TH): I would say its not one specific ingredient, but the combination! The ingredients we use are packed with antioxidants and soothing, healing properties that help ones skin say goodbye to dry, red skin! Our diaper balm is a modern version of a generation-tested remedy all the way from the Bosnian countryside. This formulation has been refined and perfected to ensure it is as effective as possible while also being convenient, accessible and affordable for todays modern families.

(BG): How do traditional diaper creams compare to EmBebas diaper cream when it comes to eczema? Do they tend to worsen the skin condition?

(TH): We cant speak to other diaper creams, but our Dont Be Rash Diaper + All Over Balm is 100% natural. It doesnt contain steroids, harsh chemicals, or preservatives, which are commonly found in many products. What weve seen through feedback from our customers is that it works so much better than anything else they have tried! Continuous use of our balm helps with prevention of rashes as well, and we prefer prevention over treatment.

(BG): The Dont Be Rash Diaper Balm comes in unique packaging that looks like a giant Chapstick! Why is this a more effective way to apply diaper rash cream in comparison to other options on the market?

(TH): As a parent, you are juggling a lot while trying to change a diaper. The last thing you want is goo all over your hands from reaching into a jar of messy cream or balm, or from squeezing cream for a tube onto your finger to apply to the diaper area. The push-up tube format allows for a more precise application and no mess (when else do we get that in parenting?!). It also allows kids who are a little older to enjoy some independence by applying it themselves! Children also love the shape and sensory experience (and parents love the distraction) that the outer cap provides.

(BG): Aside from using an effective diaper rash cream, what else should parents be doing to treat stubborn diaper rash?

(TH): Based on my experience and advice from the pediatricians with whom weve consulted, its important to keep any affected area as dry as possible. You can do that by changing diapers more frequently in addition to using an effective diaper rash cream.

RELATED: How To Prevent Diaper Rash In Babies Before It Occurs

(BG): On a similar note, what precautions can parents take to prevent diaper rash before it forms? Similarly, what can they do to prevent eczema?

(TH): Diaper rash is caused by prolonged wetness of the skin which compromises the skin barrier, and that makes one more likely to develop rashes. This happens more frequently with babies that have skin sensitivities like eczema. Preventing rashes comes down to frequent diaper changes, keeping the area dry and protected, and providing an extra barrier of moisture to help with chafing and wetness. This is what EmBeba Dont Be Rash Diaper Balm is so good at!

For eczema, I personally find these tips highly effective:

(BG): The Dont Be Rash Diaper Cream is your first product in EmBebas skincare line. Do you have any immediate plans to release any further products? Will they be specifically targeted towards babies that suffer from eczema?

(TH): Since EmBeba is a solution-focus brand for skin-sensitive families, our mission is to release innovative products that help address this particular challenge! We are so excited to be releasing five new products in 2021! As with our Don't Be Rash Diaper Balm, all of our products will be designed for anyone suffering from eczema or other skin sensitivities. Our first few products are designed for infants and young children, but our full line of products will target the entire family. In fact, I currently use Dont Be Rash Diaper + All Over Balm myself as a moisturizer for eczema flare-ups and even as a lip balm. As a mom, products that do double duty are a huge win.

Thank you so much to Thai-Anh Hoang for speaking with BabyGaga. To learn more about Embeba and thier Don't Be Rash Diaper Balm, be sure to check out their website.
