PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The introduction of highly effective anti-obesity drugs is helping physicians bridge the treatment gap and develop a comprehensive medical model for care of the obese patient, which features the rational use of lifestyle interventions, pharmaceuticals and bariatric surgery, says a physician/researcher presenting today at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) 22nd Annual Scientific and Clinical Congress in Phoenix, AZ.

The presentation, New Tools for Weight Loss Therapy: A Complications-Centric Model for Obesity Management and Cardiometabolic Disease Staging, was delivered by Dr. Timothy Garvey. He is director and principal investigator at the University of Alabama at Birminghams (UAB) Diabetes Research Center and Professor and Chair of UABs Department of Nutrition Sciences.

The presentation highlighted extensive data from a variety of sources that examines everything from incidence of side effects from the newer drugs to the impact even moderate weight loss can have on improving metabolic control and preventing diabetes.

The end result is a continuum of guidelines for medical professionals to use when treating those who are obese.

The approach emphasizes a complications-centric approach, as opposed to a BMI-centric paradigm, to identify the patients who will benefit the most from weight loss therapy, optimize the benefit/risk ratio and achieve the best outcome for our patients, Dr. Garvey says.
