Former Victorian premier Joan Kirner is undergoing treatment for oesophageal cancer.

Ms Kirner was diagnosed last month and has started chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

"I am very grateful for the medical care and attention from my doctors and the staff and management team at Peter Mac," she said in a statement.

Ms Kirner was premier of Victoria between 1990 and 1992.

Opposition leader Daniel Andrews says Ms Kirner is a tireless advocate for Labor values and has continued to work for the party since her retirement.

"Our thoughts are with Joan and her family at this time as she undertakes treatment," Mr Andrews said.

Premier Denis Napthine wished her well with her treatment.

"Joan Kirner has been a great Victorian. She's been a real leader for Victorian politics, the Victorian community and particularly Victorian women," he said.

"Our thoughts are with her and we wish her all the best in this tough fight."

Ms Kirner is the co-founder of Emily's List, an organisation dedicated to promoting the role of women in politics and rights in Australia.
