'Grey's Anatomy': Jessica Capshaw talks Calzona

Mark Sloans presence will loom over Greys Anatomy this week as Callie (Sara Ramirez) takes a step toward moving on from Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) by returning all of her stuffincluding a wedding present from their late friend that actually becomes a point of contention.

Its baby steps towards being in a relationship thats full of mutual respect, kindness, generosity, love and partners in sharing a child, Capshaw tells EW, noting that Callie and Arizona havent had many conversations outside of work. When this incident comes up, theres actually something else to deal with, so they go back to having to relate to each other in the way that they used to, but theyre trying to be super civil, sweet and kind.

Alas, this is one present Arizona doesnt necessarily want to accept. When Callie gives her the vase and its super duper ugly and she really doesnt want it, she doesnt want to reject the sentiment with which it was given, which was Callie coming forth and giving her something and taking care of her in some way, but at the same time, she really doesnt want the vase, so she tries to manipulate the situation to give it back to her, Capshaw reveals.

Just because Callie is returning Arizonas belongings doesnt mean Calzona is done for good, its just another step in the duo trying to find their own happiness. I just feel like its been a real natural progression, Capshaw says. We had the episode where Callie and Arizona knew the best thing for both of them was to not be together, and then Herman [Geena Davis] came, so it was a train we were all on that nobody could get off. So, for a lot of episodes, the focus wasnt completely on: are they together or arent they together? And now that some time has passed, its not as fresh a wound, it doesnt hurt every time the wind blows on it. Its healing and were moving on. Things are good.

Are they good enough for Callie and Arizona to eventually get back together? I dont know, Capshaw responds. Only because they had to go through so much to make that decision to be apart, its so hard to think about them being together. Theyre just getting to the point where thats all good. I would feel bad if they then took steps backwards and ended up in a relationship that was super challenging. Everyone longs for the beginning, I get that, you want them to go back to the beginning, but you cant do that with anything in life.

Besides, Callie will soon have a potential new love interest in Kevin Alejandros police captainthough hes only slated to appear in one episode so far. Could a love interest also be on the horizon for Arizona? Maybe, Capshaw says coyly. I bet. Chances are!
