Thelma & Louise star Geena Davis will be returning to television with Greys Anatomy in its Season 11, both ABC and the actress representative told E News Friday. The Oscar-winning actress will be playing a surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in the medical drama. However, it is unclear whether Davis character will fill the void left after the Shonda Rhimes series lost one of its key characters, played by Sandra Oh, who departed at the end of last season.

The 58-year-old Davis, who received an Emmy nomination for playing U.S. President Mackenzie Allen on Commander in Chief, was most recently in Lake Bells film directorial debut, In a World ... In 2012, the actress starred in the A&E miniseries Coma, which is a remake of a 1978 movie of the same name.

Greys Anatomy is also reportedly bringing back Kate Burton to reprise her role as Meredith Greys mother, Dr. Ellis Grey.

Its really a Meredith-centric season. Theres a lot of growth. Shes lost her person. Her sister has showed up. Her husband is chafing to go someplace else. Shes got all these things going on. ... But for me right now, it feels like its Meredith. Im feeling her more acutely because shes lost her person, Rhimes told the Hollywood Reporter in July.

Greys Anatomy is expected to launch its Season 11 on ABC in September.
