With 11 seasons, countless elevator rides, and more make ups and break ups than anyone on the show, Meredith and Derek are the couple you cannot give up on. Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 17 is going to push the couple through another test of their loyalty to one another, as Derek returns to Seattle to discuss why a woman answered his phone in DC.

Season 11 has not been favorable to Meredith and Derek as we watched each of these pillars of their relationship slowly crumble. Before we walk through the ruins of heartbreak city, lets look back at what makes Meredith and Dereks relationship worth rooting for after all these years.

Needless to say that Zolas entrance into the Shepherd-Grey family was a blessing for both of them. Meredith was never the motherly type and Derek wanted children so badly it began to cause a rift. Enter Zola and Bailey to not only ignite something inside of Meredith she never thought was possible, but give Meredith and Derek something to fight for that is bigger than themselves.

A big fancy wedding was never in the cards for Meredith and Derek. Instead a post it served its duty to bind the two together and get them back on their way. But arranging their city hall marriage was not the only obstacle to come between the two. Addisons return in season 1 set off a series of break ups and make ups and countless tears. Some of the best Greys Anatomy moments were brought about by the couple trying to find each other through a mess of murky waters. Although seeing them together gets the butterflies stirring, some scenes, including one of the most memorable scenes of the series, are best delivered when they are fighting for each other.

Walking away from dreams is a common occurrence in Meredith and Dereks relationship. Whether it is the dream home or the dream career, Meredith and Derek have turned their back on quite a few of their dreams. They have a few shared dreams and no shortage of long speeches and beautiful scenes about what they want from the future. However, after 11 years, their dreams are starting to pull them in two very different directions. No matter how many fights these combative dreams brought about, the truth running under it all is that they want what is best for each other.
