'Grey's Anatomy's' Caterina Scorsone: Amelia's Past Will Create Friction With Derek

Amelia Shepherd's (Caterina Scorsone) past is coming back to create friction with her golden child brother, Derek, this week on ABC's Grey's Anatomy.

The Private Practice transfer has worked tirelessly to rebuild and recover from her drug addict past, the grief of losing boyfriend Ryan and the loss of their baby, who was born without a brain.

"The biggest thing in this episode is that nobody really knows the whole story. There is a lot of gossip and speculation because of the way Amelia is outed," Scorsone tells The Hollywood Reporterof the woman from Narcotics Anonymous who arrives at the hospital who interprets Amelia's story for her.

Amelia's dark history will immediately throw everything into question for Grey Sloan Memorial's new head of neuro, with her fellow staffers each reacting in different ways. However, the biggest surprise will be how her brother, Derek (Patrick Dempsey), responds to the whole flap though the elder Shepherd was fully aware of Amelia's struggles.

"Amelia would have expected Derek would have been the person for her to turn to and lean on in this time," Scorsone says. "She does go to him and is pretty shocked by what she finds there and it's actually Meredith who ends up supporting Amelia during everything."

The resulting family drama will throw the siblings' relationship into question and force Amelia to see Derek whom she'd previously always viewed as the "responsible, golden child and father figure" in a new light.

"She's really expecting some reciprocity there and when push comes to shove, Derek's reaction is shockingly disappointing," Scorsone says. "She is surprised by it and he is equally surprised by it. He doesn't behave in a way that she would ever have expected of himself."
