The FDA announced on Monday night that Vivus Inc.s Qsymia, formerly known as Qnexa is now approved. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDAs Center for Drug Evaluation and Research states, obesity threatens the overall well being of patients and is a major public health concern. Qsymia, used responsibly in combination with a healthy lifestyle that includes a reduced-calorie diet and exercise, provides another treatment option for chronic weight management. The drug is only approved for people who are overweight or obese and have at least one weight-related health problem such as diabetes or high blood pressure and will also be prescribed a diet and exercise plan.

According to a news release by the FDA, Qsymia is a combination of two FDA approved drugs, phentermine and topiramate. Phentermine is an amphetamine used for short-term weight loss and topiramate is indicated to treat certain types of seizures for those with epilepsy and is supposed to suppress the appetite. Phentermine is the phen half of the drug fen-Phen which was taken off the market in 1997 due to numerous lawsuits that claimed the drug caused heart valve damage and resulted in a $13 billion settlement.

Results reported by the FDA state that the two trials show that after one year of treatment with the recommended and highest daily dose of Qsymia, patients had an average weight loss of 6.7 percent and 8.9 percent, respectively, over treatment with placebo. Approximately 62 percent and 69 percent of patients lost at least five percent of their body weight with the recommended dose and highest dose of Qsymia, respectively, compared with about 20 percent of patients treated with placebo.

In comparison to the FDA approved drug, the hCG diet has been around for more than 50 years. "hCG has been through trial and error and refined by doctors and nutritionists over the years, and believed to be safer and more effective than the new FDA approved drug Qsymia. Our diet consists of an all-natural hCG hormonal treatment for a short period of time with the majority of the program relying on proper nutrition." reports Julie Wright, CEO.

The hormone is found to have many benefits for both men and women. In recent years, new theories have suggested that hCG may encourage the bodys master hormone gland, the hypothalamus, to reset the bodys hormone system which can also work to normalize metabolism and even eliminate emotional eating caused by stress.
