Hendrix students share research at national meeting

Three Hendrix science students presented research at the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) meeting in West Palm Beach, Fla. in January.

The meeting had nearly 2,000 people in attendance, 611 posters, 767 talks and 12 symposia, which had close to 120 talks.

Kristen OConnell 15, a biochemistry and molecular biology major presented a talk at the meeting.

Wes Mills, a biology major and chemistry minor who graduated in the fall, presented a poster at the meeting.

Kate Emery 16, a biology major and chemistry minor, presented a poster.

The students have worked in the lab of Hendrix biology professor Dr. Jenn Dearolf (OConnell since she was a freshman; Mills and Emery since summer 2014).

SICB is a very student-friendly meeting, Dearolf said.

If you are a student and are presenting a talk or a poster at the meeting, you are able to stay at one of the conference hotels for all five nights of the meeting for only $75. You just have to work for the Society for two hours, she said. In addition, everyone at the meeting is very supportive of students. They ask questions of the student presenters because they are interested in their work. And the meeting is so broad, every student can find a few talks they want to hear or a few posters they want to view.
