KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A former detective and salsa promoter who was seriously injured in Miami is now back home in Kansas City just in time for Christmas.

His family is thrilled by his improvements, and grateful for the donations that made Howard Carney's return home possible.

Carney landed on Saturday on a private medical flight at Kansas City's downtown airport. Tens of thousands of dollars were needed, and donors made it possible.

Howard Carney's sister, Angie, spoke with KCTV5 last month about her desperation to get him home to be surrounded by loved ones. And it's already paying off.

Everything is improving for him medically and mentally, Angie Carney said about the past few days.

On Oct. 4, a distracted driver rear-ended Howard Carney's motorcycle. His injuries included brain trauma that affects his memory.

Doctors in Miami told Angie Carney that her brother's memory would improve more quickly and thoroughly if he were around people he knew. She has seen a difference already in the five days since he has returned.

It's good for him to be around people, Angie Carney said. His memory is starting to come back.

Among those who've been able to visit every day are his daughter and the 91-year-old grandfather, who raised him as a child.
