Kirner undergoes treatment for cancer

FORMER Premier Joan Kirner is undergoing treatment for cancer.

In a statement Ms Kirner said she was diagnosed last month and had started chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

"I am very grateful for the medical care and attention from my doctors, and the staff and management team at Peter Mac," she said.

"I would also like to thank my friends and family for their terrific support."

Ms Kirner and her family asked for privacy during her treatment and recovery.

Premier Denis Napthine said Ms Kirner's battle was "sad news" and Victorians' thoughts and prayers were with the former Premier.

"This is sad news and all our thoughts and prayers are with Joan as she battles oesophageal cancer, our thoughts are with her and with her family," Dr Napthine said.

"Joan Kirner has been a great Victorian, she has been a real leader for Victorian politics, the Victorian community and particularly Victorian women and our thoughts are with her and we wish her all the best in this tough fight."

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews also offered his support.
