The American Heart Association named Lauren Hersey as the inaugural Woman of Impact for raising more than $25,000 for the association amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Hersey was selected from among five nominees for the inaugural Women of Impact campaign, who were nominated by their peers to raise money and educate the public in whatever way they chose. The other 2021 nominees were Jayla Robinson, Kayla Ruble, Jill Spangler and Melissa Yeso. The winner was determined by how much she raised through fundraising as well as through the various ways they educated and worked within the community.

Hersey, the general sales manager at WTRF, worked with an extensive network of locals, with her core 10 partners, including her husband Eric, dubbed the Boss Squad, working closely with Hersey to bring in a total of $25,857 more than 37 percent of the total amount raised.

Hersey said she did a variety of fundraising activities over the six week period ending Aug. 20, ranging from yoga to lemonade stands to in-person events at local chain stores, finishing with a raffle.

I could not have done this myself, Hersey said. I had a ton of support from my business network, my business partners in the community. When I told them what I was doing, there was zero hesitation everybody was like, Yes! Im happy to support you.'

The Ohio Valley is so generous, and when theyre called upon, they say yes, and they show up, she said.

Hersey wanted to spread the message that 80% of heart diseases and stroke can be prevented with self-care, and that better wellness goes a long way.

Anybody thats currently suffering from heart disease or stroke would say the same thing. We need to give that message to take care of ourselves now, so we dont have that heartbreak in the future.

My movement has been about self-care, rather than being self-ish, and to take care of ourselves first before we can serve those around us in our community.

In addition to a trophy, Hersey was awarded a care package which includes a round of golf for four, a 50-minute spa service, a dinner for two, and a photography session. The other nominees received two tickets to the next Ohio Valley Heart & Stroke Ball.

These women have been nothing short of amazing, said Ashley Horbachewski, Development Director for the American Heart Association. Through their outstanding efforts, they have helped bring in $69,383 to our mission and helped bring awareness of heart disease being the number one killer of women to the Ohio Valley.

All five of these women are winners, added Horbachewski. Their passion and dedication to the women, men and children of the Ohio Valley is unmatched and their commitment to our mission is truly inspiring.
