Lower Gwynedd >> A local aesthetic and plastic surgery center is hoping to help teens lacking the financial resources to attend their prom get there in style.

Philadelphia-based Strella MedSpa is hosting Operation Glass Slipper, a prom dress, tuxedo and accessories drive at its Lower Gywnedd location, 1108 N. Bethlehem Pike, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 19 and 20. The drive, a first for Strella MedSpa, will benefit Operation PROM, a nonprofit that has helped more than 40,000 students nationwide attend their prom for little to no cost since 2005.

Operation PROM works with the Philadelphia School District to identify schools and students in the area to receive donations. Students must be recommended by their guidance counselor, have a passing grade in all their courses and meet financial aid requirements. Parents may also apply on behalf of their children.

Local teens from suburban Philadelphia can also apply if they meet the eligibility requirements, Strella MedSpa spokeswoman Meredith Rovine said.

The Philadelphia chapter of Operation PROM is based at Temple University, where the big shopping event will be held in April, Rovine said. The event is as close to a true shopping experience as it would be if the teen went to the mall, she said.

Every teenager deserves to feel special at their prom and no one should have to miss the prom because they cant afford to go, said Gail Norton, Strellas general manager, in a press release. We are thrilled to partner with Operation PROM to help area teens attend this annual event with pride.

Strella is hosting Operation Glass Slipper as part of its fifth anniversary celebration, Rovine said, as one way to give back to the community.

The gently used formal wear being accepted during the event includes: short or long prom, bridesmaid or formal gowns (no long sleeves or velvet) and tuxedos or suits. The clothing should be trendy and fancy, not more than 3 years old, free of damage and excessive stains and appeal to a 16- to 18-year-old. Evening bags, jewelry and shawls are also accepted.

Operation PROM was established to help low-income students attend their proms by providing free prom dresses and tuxedo rentals. It now also accepts donations of regular clothing and school supplies for students who are ill, homeless or living in shelters with no family assistance.
