I do think there is a psychological aspect at play, explains one former Premier League manager. It is on everyone involved in the game, almost expecting a good result when you play at home and perhaps a more out-of-your-hands result when you play away from home.

Home advantage is one of footballs most widely embraced notions and, indeed, the statistics back up the theories. Since its foundation in 1992, 10,725 Premier League fixtures have taken place and 46 per cent have resulted in home wins, compared to 28 per cent ending in away victories. Before this weekends latest round of results in the 2019-20 season, Europes top five leagues of England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France posted 45 per cent home wins and 31 per cent away victories.

And yet, why is it, in a sport increasingly blessed by consistent conditions luxury travel, pristine pitches, monitored sleep, controlled nutrition, identical footballs that home...
