Chemistry teachers are known for surprising students with exploding concoctions from time to time.

Katy Maligie teaches the subject at American Canyon High School. But as the Wolves volleyball head coach, the only chemistry she wants to see is the kind that makes pistons fire in a well-oiled machine.

The 2007 Chico High graduate was a three-year varsity player for the Wildcats, earning All-Eastern Athletic League honors as a junior and again in her senior season, when they finished third out of eight teams.

In the two years shes been at American Canyon as JV coach, the Wolves varsity teams have been a far cry from the Chico teams she helped challenge for league titles and make the playoffs. The Wolves have gone a combined 13-37 overall and 8-22 in the Solano County Athletic Conference, placing fourth out of six teams each year.

I think the biggest thing I noticed first, she said of when she started coaching at ACHS, was the consistency with the girls. There was no consistency with expectations and that kind of stuff. Coming from a competitive high school program, I was expecting a lot of things that werent here yet because we were still creating our culture and still creating our traditions. That kind of threw me off. But its also nice to see traditions being made.

Maligie (pronounced muh-LIG-ee) said there also needs to be more consistent fundraising from her athletes and playing strategies.

I feel that if they want new jerseys and fun events and spirit wear, they need to contribute in some way. Little things like that, she said. The work ethic was different from varsity to JV to freshmen, too. We need to keep things consistent in plays as well. Football does that (with offense and defensive systems), where the JV does a watered-down version of the varsity. Im looking forward to getting that going because my JV and freshman coaches and I are like-minded in how we see the game, so we can trickle down expectations throughout the program.

Rick Manibusan has moved up from freshman coach to JV coach, and Fontaine Segerquist, who assisted former varsity head coach Tara Brown the last two years, has taken over the freshmen. Maligie said Manibusan is mentoring her on the administrative duties of being a head coach as he does with his brother, Wolves wrestling head coach Tom Manibusan, because he was a longtime wrestling head coach at Hogan High.

Rick has been helping me a lot with things I didnt even know I had to do, Maligie said.

She said Brown, the wife of American Canyon varsity baseball head coach Matt Brown, stepped down to have more time with their young children.
