A Sioux Falls man is accused of stealing from someone while they were in custody for mental health issues.

Joseph Emmanuel Makwet was indicted on a grand theft charge this week for allegely taking electronics from someone who had been taken into custody on a mental health hold.

The victim in June reported that several electronic items were missing from his apartment after he had returned from a multi-day mental health hold. He reported that a 55-inch television, four bass speakers, three laptops andtwo speakers were missing, all valued at more than $5,000, according to an affidavit in support of an arrest warrant.

The victim told police that Makwet had been in his apartment the day the victim was taken into custodyand hadn't seen him since. Makwet, 40, posted a photo on Facebook and the victim recognized some of his electronics, according to the affidavit.

A few days after the victim reported the theft, Makwet's girlfriend returned some of the items. She told police she had been out of town and found electronics that didn't belong to her in her apartment after returning home in late June.

Makwet was indicted by a Minnehaha County grand jury on one count of grand theft, a Class 4 felony. He is listed as in custody and scheduled for an initial appearance on Jan. 3, 2020.
