"People simply wont seek the help that they need because theyre made to feel ashamed." - Kevin Fischer, NAMI Michigan

Those battling mental illness can get extra help in the Grand Traverse region.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness or NAMI has 15 affiliates across the state. The Grand Traverse chapter cut the ribbon Thursday on their new partnership with Traverse Connect. NAMI offers education and support, and advocates for anyone affected by mental health issues.

NAMI Michigan Executive Director Kevin Fischer says, We dont provide psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers. What we do is connect people with resources. So if you or a loved one is diagnosed, and most of us dont know what resources look like. You can reach your local NAMI. Well connect you with local resources.

Fischer adds, NAMIs mission is to improve the quality of life for the millions of Americans that are affected by mental illness. Not just those with a diagnosis, but for family members, caregivers, and really the community at large.

Fischer says mental illness is a growing problem, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made it worse. One in five Americans are affected by mental illness. Thats over 60 million people annually. And with the Covid-19 pandemic, thats actually gone to 1 in 4. So were talking about 25% of the U.S. population affected by mental health crisis in a given year.

NAMI offers education, support groups, and classes at no cost. Meanwhile, the first ever NAMI Walk in Traverse City will be held September 25th. The goal is to raise awareness and serve as a fundraiser. Its free to join in but donations are accepted. For information click here.
