Students, alumni join together to give back to the community during annual National Day of Service

Nearly 375 Montclair State volunteers gardened, picked up trash, painted and performed other acts of community outreach in the Universitys annual National Day of Service that honors and remembers the victims, survivors and heroes of the 9/11 attacks.

Students, alumni and community members joined together for the service projects spearheaded by the Center for Community Engagement and Volunteer Center. Campus partners include the Center for Student Involvement, Residential Education and Chartwells.

Teams of Montclair State volunteers fanned out on Saturday, September 14, to 25 community- and faith-based organizations around the local area and the region, including St. Peters Food Pantry and the Boys & Girls Club, both in Clifton; and Covenant House and Van Vleck Gardens in Montclair. On campus, they spruced up the community garden and assisted in a project to end human trafficking.

The 9/11 National Day of Service is a wonderful way for students to kick off the fall semester. It provides an opportunity for students to begin their year on a positive note by giving back to local communities through service and it reminds students of the sacrifice made by first responders back on that fateful that in 2001, said Bryan Murdock, director of the Center for Community Engagement.

Montclair State has been participating in the National Day of Service for the past 12 years. This year, the event benefitted: Boys & Girls Club of Clifton, Canterbury Village, Cerebral Palsy, City Green, Community FoodBank of NJ, Covenant House: Nancys Place, Covenant House: Rights of Passage, Father English, Jersey Cares, Job Haines, KinderSmile Foundation, Lifelong Montclair, Little Falls clean-up, MedShare, Montclair Community Farms/Historical Center, Passaic City Park clean-up, St. Peters Food Pantry, Van Vleck Gardens, Wynonas House. On campus, volunteers helped Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Chartwells, Human Trafficking project, Montclair State Campus Community Garden and the Campus Unity Rock.
