Morristown Medical Center hosts ‘Frontiers in Interventional Cardiology’ symposium

Morristown Medical Centers Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute recently celebrated its 25th anniversary of cardiac surgery and coronary angioplasty by hosting a symposium titled "Frontiers in Interventional Cardiology" at the Short Hills Hilton Hotel on Sept. 20.

Morristowns Department of Cardiovascular Medicine encompasses the largest cardiovascular surgical program in New Jersey and has nationally-recognized expertise in each of cardiologys major disciplines.

Dr. Barry Cohen, medical director of the Cath Lab at Morristown Medical Center and a Short Hills resident said, We are so proud to have gathered many of todays leaders in the field to help address the constant change in the field of cardiology. He continued, Morristown is at the epicenter of advanced catheter-based therapeutics in New Jersey, pioneering ground-breaking research in TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement), MitraClip for nonsurgical mitral valve repair for leaking mitral valve and the latest coronary stent technologies.

Co-chairs of the event included: Dr. Cohen, Dr. Robert Kipperman, director of the Valve and Structural Heart Program at Morristown Medical Center, Dr. Maurice Buchbinder, professor of medicine at Stanford University who also delivered the keynote address and a discussion on mitral valve therapies and Dr. Linda Gillam, chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Gagnon, who highlighted the rapidly evolving field of catheter technologies for patients who are at high risk for standard surgery.

In addition, Morristowns Dr. Jordan Safirstein, delivered a speech and demonstration on Google Glass.

Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute, a state-of-the-art, five-story, 230,000 square-foot building situated on the Morristown Medical Center campus, is dedicated to meeting the challenges of adult heart and vascular diseases. It includes eight operating rooms (two hybrid), five catheterization labs, three electrophysiology labs and advanced non-invasive imaging capability.
