Sylvia Mosher shared her experiences about living with her disability with Sault Star readers for more than a decade.

She died last Wednesday at Algoma Manor in Thessalon, six days after her 58th birthday.

Mosher, who had cerebral palsy, wrote Challenges, a monthly column for the newspaper. The Algoma University College graduate touched on subjects ranging from dealing with tight finances, appealing for more sports and recreation options for the disabled in Sault Ste. Marie and her frustration trying to navigate around merchandise in store aisles.

This may sound heartless, but I am getting so that I dont care if something gets knocked off because its not my fault that things are too close together, Mosher wrote in a November 2011 column. I dont make the decision to put things in the middle of aisles where wheelchairs ride and people walk and push carts.

When she suffered a broken arm in a skiing accident, Mosher wanted the man who was steering her not to feel bad about what happened. She was a grown woman who wanted to go skiing and happened to have an accident.

All my life many people have felt sorry for me, which really gets on my nerves because this is the only life I know, and it has no room for pity, Mosher said in a December 2010 column. Ill admit that sometimes I will have pity parties and will want peoples sympathy, but thats just because Im a suck and want what I want right now. However, thats totally selfish of me. I dont need to be pitied; I need to be counted on as an equal who has a few problems.

Mosher was excited about the opening of Accessibility Centre of Sault Ste. Marie in 2005. She called the office at John Rhodes Community Centre a one-stop shop for everything disability-related and more.

Her last column ran in March 2012.

A celebration of Moshers life will be held at a future date.
