REGINA Theres a new therapy on the market for patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS).

Lemtrada (alemtuzumab) has been approved in Canada and made available to patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RMSS).

In clinical trials, up to 80 per cent of patients who received two treatment courses required no further therapy.

In a news release, an investigator in the Lemtrada clinical trial called the drug an important advancement.

Our own experience in treating 35 patients through clinical trials with Lemtrada has been extremely positive, said Dr. Anthony Traboulsee of the UBC Hospital MS Clinic.

The MS Society of Canada says it welcomes any new treatment options.

About 15 years ago, we didnt have any disease-modifying therapies for MS. Now we actually have 10, said Virginia Harper, a spokesperson for the MS Society of Canada Saskatchewan Division.

Thats absolutely a positive move and the pace of research is moving really quickly.
