Mystery surrounds sudden death of man, 31, found with traumatic brain injury – Stoke-on-Trent Live

The family of a 31-year-old warehouse worker will never know what caused him to suffer bleeding on the brain in the hours before his death.

Relatives of Abubakir Abdullah had heard a report hed been assaulted a week or two earlier on a night out in Hanley.

But police investigated this line of inquiry and could find no evidence of an attack after speaking to several clubs, viewing CCTV footage and checking their own incident logs.

An inquest heard another suggestion from his family was he may have fallen on his way home after having too much to drink.

Now North Staffordshire assistant coroner Sarah Murphy has ruled he died from a traumatic subdural haematoma and brain stem haemorrhage, the cause of which was unknown.

She said: I find it unlikely that the injury was caused by a third party.

Mr Abdullah, who was employed by an agency and worked at Portmeirion, had been living at Hanleys YMCA.

YMCA staff noticed his alcohol intake had increased and he would sometimes arrive back at his room drunk. He had received several warnings for this.

On August 7, concerns were raised as his family hadnt been able to contact him.

Staff gained access to his accommodation and found him in bed unresponsive. They called for an ambulance.

Mr Abdullah was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital, where a CT scan revealed the large haematoma. He underwent an emergency operation, but his condition deteriorated and he died in intensive care on August 8.

The inquest was told about three ambulance callouts in the weeks leading up to his death.

On July 10, West Midlands Ambulance Service had a call from the YMCA after staff saw he had a gash to the back of his head. Mr Abdullah declined treatment.

Then on August 6, he complained of feeling dizzy and kept on falling down when he stood up. He had also not been eating for a few days.

The ambulance patient record confirmed that paramedics carried out a neurological assessment on him. There was no visual disturbance or confusion.

The care plan was for observations, it stated. YMCA staff were due to monitor him and Mr Abdullah was advised about pain relief.

The following day, paramedics were called out again and, this time, took him to hospital.

Detective Constable Tracy Gascoigne said police spoke to Mr Abdullahs family, who mentioned a possible incident on the night of July 31 in Hanley. They thought he had been ejected from a bar and had then been assaulted outside another club.

Police contacted both venues and they had no reports of an incident. CCTV of the city centre was also viewed and came back negative.

DC Gascoigne said in a statement: The only report of Mr Abdullah being seen with a head injury was on July 10, when he refused treatment. There was no mention of a fall or assault.

Medical staff were also unable to come up with a specific cause for his haematoma.
