New cardiology facility at Sunshine Hospital

New cardiology services including a catheter laboratory to perform time-critical imaging and treatment will open at Sunshine Hospital early next year.

Health Minister David Davis said the government was providing $11 million for the new cardiology facility to ensure patients in Melbournes west could receive treatment closer to home.

He said the facility would include a second CT scanner and an electrophysiology lab where patients with an irregular heartbeat could be tested, diagnosed and treated.

Western Health chief executive Alex Cockram said receiving timely treatment was vital to ensure the best outcomes for patients after a heart attack.

For the people of the west theyve had to move to other hospitals . . . so its really fantastic they can now get care here at [Sunshine] hospital when they are arrive, she said.

Mr Davis said the new cardiology facility would complement an intensive care unit due to open at the hospital, amid growing demand for services in Melbournes west.
