A new hair loss drug undergoing trials could rival Propecia as the next generation hair loss treatment.

Professor Valerie Randell, from the university of Bradford, has said that it is already known that Bimatoprost stimulates eye-lash growth, and that it is used clinically for this purpose, but now tests have shown that Bimatoprost does indeed stimulate growth in human scalp hair follicles which opens a whole new approach into hair loss treatments.

The exciting thing is that Bimatoprost has been around for some years now, so we know it is a safe drug, which should make the licencing application easier, if and when it is applied for.

Clinical Trials are now taking place with participants undergoing six months of treatment with either a solution of Bimatoprost, applied to the scalp or a placebo. They involve 220 men and 172 women.The results should be available before the end of the year.
