New York to use GPS in #39;bait bottles #39; to track drug theft
The New York Police Department will start tagging pharmacies prescription bottles with GPS chips amid the legitimate supplies on their shelves in hopes of fighting the theft of painkillers and other highly addictive prescription medicines. The GPS signals will be sent off to track stolen bottles and uncover large-scale prescription drug stash houses. Police Commissioner said the initiative was prompted by a recent spate of pill-related crimes, such as web-based dealing rings and a 2011 shooting robbery at a Long Island pharmacy. The Commissioner said that prescription drug abuse can serve as a gateway to criminal activities, especially among young people. Reuters reported that federal and New York Police Department investigators seized 9000 painkillers being sold at an open-air drug market in northern Manhattan last year. New York police have created a database of the 6000 pharmacies in the New York City area, many of which police plan to visit to recommend improved security measures.
