According to a Wall Street Journal NFL report, the National Football League has provided a $30 million grant to research brain trauma in an effort to understand further the lifelong impact of these injuries.
"People's lives are forever altered following head trauma, compounding the tragedy further, injuries to the brain often go undetected," stated lead TBI attorney, Don Worley.
Head injuries are not simply limited to athletes, according to the site. Vehicle accidents, bike falls, work accidents and other tragedies can lead to damage of the brains normal functioning.
According to the Wall Street Journal report, autopsies of former football player brains have characteristics similarly seen in Alzheimer's, dementia, and other degenerative brain diseases.
"Greater public awareness will lead to people getting the treatment they need, quicker, and may help people avoid the confusion, uncertainty and frustration that accompanies such symptoms without an explanation.
