Oxeia Biopharmaceuticals has announced that it has completed an interim analysis of its ongoing phase 2 trial (NCT04558346) of the investigational therapy OXE103, a potential pharmaceutical treatment for concussion.1 No specific data were released in this announcement, but the company noted that once the full topline dataset is available, the results will be presented at an upcoming medical conference. The trial is being conducted at the University of Kansas Medical Center and is seeking to enroll 40 participants within 28 days of concussive injury who are highly symptomatic at screening, with a primary outcome measure of symptom management changes as measured by the Post Concussion Symptoms Scalequestionnaire during the intervention period, done at days 1 and 15, and the post-treatment period, done at days 21 and 44. Late Onset Occurrence of Concomitant Myocardial Infarction and Ischemi | IJGM – Dove Medical Press

Posted: Published on August 19th, 2022

Introduction Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak is a global health emergency caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a highly pathogenic human coronavirus.1 Despite the fast-growing understanding of the clinical features and natural history of COVID-19, its pathophysiology is still debated and the treatment remains largely empirical or based on observational evidence.2 Although mildly symptomatic in many cases,3 COVID-19 may be complicated by severe conditions such as adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, cardiac arrhythmias, stroke, myocardial infarction, and death.46 The thromboembolic complications may be due to both the pro-inflammatory state related to COVID-197,8 and the acute discontinuation of cardiovascular medications during hospitalization.9,10 We described the rare case of late onset concomitant myocardial infarction and stroke in COVID-19 patient who discontinued cardiovascular medications during hospitalization. A 68-year-old man with arterial hypertension and dyslipidemia was admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) of Cotugno Hospital for fever and wheezing lasting more than three days. Continue reading

Posted: Published on August 19th, 2022

About every 40 seconds, someone in the United States (US) has a myocardial infarction (MI).1The outcomes after MI depend on the time that elapses before treatment begins. More than half of individuals with an MI die in an emergency room or before reaching a hospital within an hour of symptom onset. Although the outcome after myocardial infarction, commonly known as Heart Attack, depends on the time to treatment, a delay between symptom onset and treatment is common Continue reading

August 18, 2022 A variant typical of the Finnish population that protects against heart diseases was identified in the FinnGen genomic study coordinated by the University of Helsinki. The risk of developing heart diseases is roughly one-fifth lower in carriers of the variant compared to the population on average. The protective effect of the newly discovered variant against coronary heart disease is likely to be caused by the below-average arterial stiffness of variant carriers Continue reading
