Biotechnology is the link between basic biological research and the development and commercialisation of technologies resulting from it. In that way, its an ideal field for those with an interest in biology who are looking for an applied and varied career. At the University of Adelaide, both the Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) and the Master of Biotechnology (Biomedical) programs are popular with students from all over the world. About sixty-four percent of students undertaking the Biotechnology undergraduate program are from overseas, says Program Coordinator, Dr Tony Fratini. The biomedical Masters program is also very popular with international students. The strength of the Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) program and the field of biotechnology in general is its multi-discipline approach to solving problems. The program is run across the fields of biomedicine, agriculture, food production, chemical engineering and even commerce, meaning students can choose from a wide variety of majors in their final year.
