The Dark Corners of Our DNA Hold Clues about Disease

Posted: Published on December 19th, 2014

A deep-learning algorithm shines a light on mutations in once obscure areas of the genome The so-called "streetlight effect" has often fettered scientists who study complex hereditary diseases. Credit: Svisio/Thinkstock The so-called streetlight effect has often fettered scientists who study complex hereditary diseases. The term refers to an old joke about a drunk searching for his lost keys under a streetlight. A cop asks, "Are you sure this is where you lost them?" The drunk says, "No, I lost them in the park, but the light is better here." For researchers who study the genetic roots of human diseases, most of the light has shone down on the 2 percent of the human genome that includes protein-coding DNA sequences. Thats fine. Lots of diseases are caused by mutations there, but those mutations are low-hanging fruit, says University of Toronto (U.T.) professor Brendan Frey who studies genetic networks. Theyre easy to find because the mutation actually changes one amino acid to another one, and that very much changes the protein. The trouble is, many disease-related mutations also happen in noncoding regions of the genomethe parts that do not directly make proteins but that still regulate how genes behave. Scientists have long … Continue reading

Attorney: Worker linked to murder by tainted DNA

Posted: Published on December 19th, 2014

SAN DIEGO - The DNA evidence linking a one-time San Diego police lab worker to the 1984 murder of a 14-year-old girl was likely the result of cross-contamination, an attorney for his family said Thursday. Kevin Charles Brown, 62, was found dead of an apparent suicide at Cuyamaca State Park on Oct. 21. San Diego police said that at the time of Brown's death, preparations were being made to arrest him for allegedly taking part in the killing of 14-year-old Claire Hough. RELATED: Deceased ex-SDPD criminalist named suspect in girl's murder in 1984 The teen was found dead at Torrey Pines State Beach on Aug. 24, 1984. She had been beaten, strangled and stabbed, and one of her breasts had been cut off, authorities said. In November 2012, cold case homicide detectives uncovered DNA evidence that allegedly linked Brown and a second man, Ronald Clyde Tatro, to the slaying. Tatro was 67 when he died in a boating accident in Tennessee in 2011. Brown worked in the police lab from 1982 until his retirement in 2002. He was not assigned to the Hough investigation, but attorney Eugene Iredale said Brown had been working while samples from the teen's body were … Continue reading

High marks for Glendale Community College chemistry teacher, students

Posted: Published on December 19th, 2014

Theres one thing that the students who take Sevada Chamras organic chemistry class know that his exams are considerably more difficult than the American Chemistry Societys standardized test which may explain why Glendale Community College students scored in the 85 percentile after recently taking the national exam. What I have been told by almost all of my students is that they find the [American Chemistry Societys test] easier than my exams, Chamras said. If theyre trained to run 50K, 26K would feel much easier to you, he said. The two-semester class requires three hours of lecture and six hours in the lab each week, and students take the American Chemistry Societys exam at the end of their second semester. Within the time frame Chamras has with students, hes on the search for what he calls, the click the moment when students grasp the concepts of organic chemistry. It happens at different points in time for different people, he said, adding that some click a little bit into the second semester. Unfortunately, just like any other [class], I do have people who never click, Chamras said, but sometimes that can be due to family commitments or work pressures. Since 1999, when … Continue reading

Phantom Chemistrys latest release: Whiskey Slurs

Posted: Published on December 19th, 2014

Phantom Chemistry seems an apt name for this Syracuse band. Founded in 2008, the bands members; Mike Burriesci (vocals, guitar, keyboard), John Ocasio (guitar and keyboard), Teddy Bratt (guitar and keyboard), Zack Parsell (bass, who took over for Dillon Cook who played bass for the recording of Whiskey Slurs) look like they could be some random college students from a Chem 101 class, but in recording their third release Whiskey Slurs, they perform musical alchemy. It is mysterious and hard to define the quality that brings together these musicians to create what they describe as self-styled psychedelic electro-indie rock. Together, their separate elements fuse and react into a combustible intensity that makes the listeners inner mad scientist cackle with a frantic cry: Its aliveIts ALIVE!!!!! The album was recorded over the past year by front man Burriesci in his self- built basement studio, Chemical Swirl Studio, and then mastered by Steve Sopchak at The Square Studio. In the beginning, I spent a lot of time isolated in my house with an acoustic guitar and a piano. I had recently picked up the piano so I spent a lot of time sitting at it every day. Burriesci remarked. Of the recording … Continue reading

Moss laments lack of chemistry with QB

Posted: Published on December 19th, 2014

ASHBURN, Va. - Santana Moss has caught just seven passes this year for the Washington Redskins. At age 35, he knows he might not be much in demand once the season is over. That makes it a fair time to reflect on a good career that might have been even better, if only he could have played with a steady quarterback. And also to defend the first-year coach who made him a bench-warmer. "I feel like I've been cursed," Moss said with a laugh. "Everywhere I've been, I've had a million quarterbacks, man." Moss has averaged one quarterback per year, catching passes from 14 QBs since entering the league in 2001. An uninspiring list ranging from Jason Campbell (214) to Brooks Bollinger (2) has contributed to his 729 career receptions for 10,258 yards with the New York Jets and Redskins. Not bad, but he says he could have had "numbers like the other guys" he feels are on his level if he could've developed some long-term QB chemistry. "Never had a solid guy that I can really grow with," Moss said. This year, the Redskins have used three starters: Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy. It hasn't mattered … Continue reading

Cardiology Drugs Of The Year: New, Old, And Not-So-Funny

Posted: Published on December 19th, 2014

New Drug Of The Year This was an easy choice. The new drug of the year isLCZ696, the upcoming heart failure drug from Novartis. At the beginning of the year only a few heart failure experts were aware of it, and no one in the heart failure community or on Wall Street had even suggested that it might be a blockbuster. Expectations, if any, were that the drug would join the long string of recent failures of novel cardiovascular drugs, especially since LCZ696 is a chemical cousin to omipatrilat, the Bristol Myers drug which certainly counts as one of the most spectacular drug failures of all time. Then, on the last day ofMarch, during the American College of Cardiology meeting, Novartis issueda press releasedisclosing that the pivotal phase 3 LCZ696 trial,PARADIGM HF, had been stopped early on the recommendation of theData Monitoring Committee because ofa significant reduction in the combined primary endpoint of cardiovascular death and heart failure hospitalization. The initial announcement garnered onlymodest interest, since by now many observers have learned to be skeptical when a trial is stopped early. Too often the results dont hold up or reflect a statistically significant difference thatmay nottranslate into clinical significance. But … Continue reading
