This transition was initiated with the advent of laparoscopic surgery being accepted globally owing to the ease associated with it for both the clinicians and patients. The patients return to functional activity quickly and have fewer complications during and post the surgical intervention. Thus, increasing awareness among the patient population towards less traumatic, minimal incision procedures and preventive healthcare are the major driver attributing the minimally invasive surgery market. Growth of Minimally Invasive Surgery market can also be attributed to technological innovations in the field of Telemedicine and medical robotics. Keith Vanderlinde/NSF The BICEP2 telescope at the South Pole may have spied gravitational waves or dust. This year may be best remembered for how quickly scientific triumph morphed into disappointment, and even tragedy: breakthroughs in stem-cell research and cosmology were quickly discredited; commercial spaceflight faced major setbacks. Yet landing a probe on a comet, tracing humanitys origins and a concerted push to understand the brain provided reasons to celebrate. Asian nations soared into space this year. The Indian Space Research Organisation put a mission into orbit around Mars the first agency to do so on its first try. Japan launched the Hayabusa-2 probe, its second robotic voyage to bring back samples from an asteroid. And even as Chinas lunar rover Yutu (or Jade Rabbit) stopped gathering data on the Moons surface, mission controllers took the next step in the countrys lunar exploration programme by sending a test probe around the Moon and back to Earth. But for commercial spaceflight, it was a bad year. Virgin Galactics proposed tourism vehicle SpaceShipTwo disintegrated during a test flight in California and killed one of its pilots. That came just three days after a launch-pad explosion in Virginia destroyed an uncrewed private rocket intended … Continue reading

Four clinics face action over stem-cell treatment claims

Posted: Published on December 18th, 2014

The wife of well-known former monk Mitsuo Shibahashi, previously known as Phra Mitsuo Gavesako, owns one of the clinics. The department began looking into their operation after one patient complained about losing more than Bt2 million on the treatment. The patient was treated for and hopes to recover from a brain infarction (stroke or blood clot). Probes reveal the clinics allegedly provided basic check-ups before arranging for their customers to get stem-cell injections in Germany. "According to the Medical Council's regulations, stem-cell treatment is allowed for blood-related diseases only," the department's director-general Boonruang Triruangwor-awat said yesterday. He said three of the four clinics had clearly violated rules about advertising medical services. "[Their] benefits are exaggerated," he said, The four clinics are located in CentralWorld, Ekkamai area, Soi Thonglor 55, and Ploenchit Centre. Boonruang said these clinics could be punished under Article 34(2) of the Medical Facilities Act. "Offenders face a jail term of up to one year or a maximum fine of Bt20,000," he said. He added that his department was also in the process of seeking the Medical Council's ruling to determine if these clinics could be punished under Article 49. Christmas wish granted for Rockhampton couple

Posted: Published on December 18th, 2014

FOR the past six years, Gavin and Belinda Scofield felt like there was a hole in their family of two. But 10 weeks ago on October 7 that hole was filled by a beautiful baby boy, Jack Micheal Scofield. And it's all thanks to IVF treatment. Belinda, 30, said she and her husband turned to IVF after years of unsuccessful attempts to conceive naturally. "We got to the stage where we'd had enough of trying on our own for about two years," she said. "We tried IVF because I had known of someone who had been through it and the doctor suggested we try the method. We had IVF treatment at the Rockhampton clinic over four years. "It was so hard to hear of people getting pregnant and having children when you didn't know if you'd ever have that opportunity. During the four years I miscarried a couple of times and it was so hard to talk about that disappointment when you lose a baby. You don't want to have to keep telling people about that loss." During the IVF process, Belinda had many visits to the clinic, a series of blood tests, ultrasounds and numerous injections to stimulate her … Continue reading

Myriad, Omaha Steaks, Abbott Healthcare: Intellectual Property

Myriad Genetics Inc. (MYGN) lost its bid to block competing DNA tests to determine risk for breast and ovarian cancer as a U.S. appeals court said three patents on the tests never should have been issued. The patents cover products of nature that arent eligible for legal protection, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said in an opinion posted yesterday on its docket. The court upheld a trial judges decision to allow the competing tests, including those made by Ambry Genetics Corp., to remain on the market. The tests check genes known as BRCA to determine whether theres a hereditary risk of developing the diseases. Myriad was the only company offering the tests until the U.S. Supreme Court last year limited the ability to obtain patents on human genetic sequences. Some patent claims in this case were similar to those invalidated by the high court, a three-judge panel ruled. They are structurally identical to the ends of DNA strands found in nature, U.S. Circuit Judge Timothy Dyk wrote for the panel. A DNA structure with a function similar to that found in nature can only be patent-eligible as a composition of matter if it has a unique … Continue reading
