Music videos: new tool for detecting brain injuries

Posted: Published on December 17th, 2014

A new eye-tracking technology using musicvideos points to a fast new way to assess brain injuries, according to a new study in the Journal of Neurosurgerypublished online Tuesday. The results could be especially useful in screening combat veterans, the study's authors said, because the technology is particularly well-suited for identifying concussions and blast injuries. Using a tool designed at NYU Langone Medical Center, researchers there enlisted 169 veterans, 157 of whom were healthy. The remaining 12 had known weaknesses in the nerves that move the eyes up and down and side to side, or brain swelling adjacent to those nerves. All the participants were asked to watch either a music video or TV for 3 and 1/2 minutes. In the healthy subjects the ratio of horizontal to vertical eye movements was close to one-to-one. In the dozen with known weakness or swelling in the nerves that control eye movement, the ratio was significantly skewed depending on the affected nerve. In each case, scientists were able to use the quantitative measurement to pinpoint the location of the injury or weakness. "One of the reasons that clinical trials for treatment of brain injury have failed in the past is that brain injury … Continue reading

New Technology Advances Eye Tracking As Biomarker for Brain Function and Recovery from Brain Injury

Posted: Published on December 17th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise NEW YORK, NY -- Researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center have developed new technology that can assess the location and impact of a brain injury merely by tracking the eye movements of patients as they watch music videos for less than four minutes, according to a study published Friday on-line in the Journal of Neurosurgery. The study suggests that the use of eye tracking technology may be a potential biological marker for assessing brain function and monitoring recovery for patients with brain injuries. Led by Uzma Samadani, MD, PhD, chief of neurosurgery at New York Harbor Health Care System and co-director of the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Veterans Center for the Study of Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury at NYU Langone, the study looked at 169 veterans; 157 of whom were neurologically healthy and 12 who either had known weaknesses in the nerves that move the eyes, or brain swelling adjacent to those nerves. These nerves affect how the eye moves up and down and side to side. Using a technology developed at NYU Langone, the investigators had the participants watch a music video or television content for 220 seconds while … Continue reading

Breast cancer suit reaches settlement

Posted: Published on December 17th, 2014

A class-action lawsuit that alleged links between a hormone replacement therapy drug and breast cancer involving up to 132 women in B.C. is expected to reach a settlement in the B.C. Supreme Court early next year. Douglas Lennox, a class-action lawyer at Klein Lyons, said on Tuesday the case involving the drugs Premarin and Premplus used to relieve symptoms of menopause has been tentatively settled, and the defendant company Wyeth has agreed to pay $13.65 million to a potential 1,120 claimants across the country. The case was initially scheduled for trial on Oct. 14, but a tentative settlement was made just three days prior to that, Lennox said. The court has to review it and decide whether to thumbs up or thumbs down if the court doesnt like (the tentative deal), well have to reschedule a trial, he said. Over 1,000 people signed up for the case and the only chance to review the documents, once theyre finalized, they can vote yes or no. According to the initial statement of claim, the case began after a study by U.S. health officials found increased risks of heart disease, strokes, blood cots, and breast cancer attributed to the hormone therapy. Stem cells faulty in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Stanford researchers find

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 17-Dec-2014 Contact: Krista Conger kristac@stanford.edu 650-725-5371 Stanford University Medical Center @sumedicine Like human patients, mice with a form of Duchenne muscular dystrophy undergo progressive muscle degeneration and accumulate connective tissue as they age. Now, researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have found that the fault may lie at least partly in the stem cells that surround the muscle fibers. They've found that during the course of the disease, the stem cells become less able to make new muscle and instead begin to express genes involved in the formation of connective tissue. Excess connective tissue -- a condition called fibrosis -- can accumulate in many organs, including the lungs, liver and heart, in many different disorders. In the skeletal muscles of people with muscular dystrophy, the fibrotic tissue impairs the function of the muscle fibers and leads to increasing weakness and stiffness, which are hallmarks of the disease. The researchers discovered that this abnormal change in stem cells could be inhibited in laboratory mice by giving the animals a drug that is already approved for use in humans. The drug works by blocking a signaling pathway involved in the development of fibrosis. Although much more research … Continue reading

Genetic mutation found to cause ovarian failure

Posted: Published on December 17th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 17-Dec-2014 Contact: George Hunka ghunka@aftau.org 212-742-9070 American Friends of Tel Aviv University @AFTAUnews Premature ovarian failure, also known as primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), affects 1% of all women worldwide. In most cases, the exact cause of the condition, which is often associated with infertility, is difficult to determine. A new Tel Aviv University study throws a spotlight on a previously-unidentified cause of POI: a unique mutation in a gene called SYCE1 that has not been previously associated with POI in humans. The research, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, was led by Dr. Liat de Vries and Prof. Lina Basel-Vanagaite of TAU's Sackler Faculty of Medicine and Schneider Children's Medical Center and conducted by a team of researchers from both TAU and Schneider. While the genes involved in chromosome duplication and division had been shown to cause POI in animal models, this is the first time a similar mutation has been identified in humans. A new insight "Researchers know that POI may be associated with Turner's syndrome, a condition in which a woman has only one X chromosome instead of two, or could be due to toxins like chemotherapy and radiation therapy," said Dr. … Continue reading
