VitaThreads LLC Announces a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I Grant Award by the National Institutes …

Posted: Published on December 16th, 2014

WORCESTER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--VitaThreads LLC today reported that the National Institute of General Medical Sciences1 has awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I Grant for the study of the VitaSuture Wound Management Systems (VWMS). VitaThreads will collaborate with Kevin Smith, MD, Clinical Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Chapel Hill. The objective of the Phase I Grant, entitled, "Fibrin Sutures for Non-scarring Wound Closure" will be to optimize the performance characteristics of VWMS. Dr. Smith commented, Im excited to collaborate with VitaThreads as part of this SBIR Phase I Grant award. Facial suture technology has not appreciably advanced over the past many years and I believe that devices which enable rapid, scar-free healing offer the best clinical option for patients undergoing facial wound repair for aesthetic procedures. The data I have seen from VitaThreads VWMS technology suggests an opportunity to achieve this objective. I look forward to working with VitaThreads to further develop VWMS and seeing this device enter the clinic. VitaThreads previously reported that the company had met the primary endpoint of incision closure and secondary histological endpoints in pre-clinical in-vivo animal studies. VWMS demonstrated successful … Continue reading

Cell biologists discover on-off switch for key stem cell gene

Consider the relationship between an air traffic controller and a pilot. The pilot gets the passengers to their destination, but the air traffic controller decides when the plane can take off and when it must wait. The same relationship plays out at the cellular level in animals, including humans. A region of an animal's genome -- the controller -- directs when a particular gene -- the pilot -- can perform its prescribed function. A new study by cell and systems biologists at the University of Toronto (U of T) investigating stem cells in mice shows, for the first time, an instance of such a relationship between the Sox2 gene which is critical for early development, and a region elsewhere on the genome that effectively regulates its activity. The discovery could mean a significant advance in the emerging field of human regenerative medicine, as the Sox2 gene is essential for maintaining embryonic stem cells that can develop into any cell type of a mature animal. "We studied how the Sox2 gene is turned on in mice, and found the region of the genome that is needed to turn the gene on in embryonic stem cells," said Professor Jennifer Mitchell of U … Continue reading

Jazz begins rolling NDA submission for defibrotide to treat severe hepatic VOD

Posted: Published on December 16th, 2014

PBR Staff Writer Published 15 December 2014 Ireland-based Jazz Pharmaceuticals has started rolling submission of a new drug application (NDA) to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for defibrotide to treat severe hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) therapy. The US FDA has also granted fast track designation to defibrotide for the treatment of severe VOD. In its severe form, VOD can be life-threatening and is related with multi-organ failure, while it is fatal in more than 80% of patients Jazz Pharmaceuticals executive vice-president and chief medical officer Jeffrey Tobias said: "Our start of the NDA submission for defibrotide marks an important step forward in our efforts to provide a treatment option for patients in the US who develop this rare, life-threatening complication of HSCT. "We expect to complete the submission of the NDA in the first half of 2015, at which time we will be requesting a Priority Review of the application, and we will continue to work closely with the FDA as we seek approval of the NDA. "As part of our commitment to ensure that eligible patients have access to defibrotide as we pursue US approval, we will continue to provide … Continue reading
