DNA was storage arsonist’s undoing

DNA evidence pointed to just one man starting a massive blaze at a Wellington storage facility. Angelo Bitossi, 35, was found guilty of arson on Thursday at the High Court in Wellington. Justice Simon France found the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that Bitossi had started a fire at the Kiwi Self Storage facility in Kilbirnie on April 4. The storage unit where the fire began belonged to Darren McKinley, with whom Bitossi had a falling out. The fire sparked a massive blaze which destroyed part of the facility and caused millions of dollars in damage, with hundreds of people losing personal possessions. A black and purple cap discovered by investigators on a driveway between two units was later shown to contain Bitossi's DNA. "When one looks at the CCTV footage of the offender coming back after setting the fire, the person appears to be wearing the exact type of hat," said Justice France. The Crown established that no other DNA was found on the cap besides Bitossi's and he was seen wearing it in the days leading up to the fire. U-Va. students challenge Rolling Stone account of alleged sexual assault

It was 1 a.m. on a Saturday when the call came. A friend, a University of Virginia freshman who earlier said she had a date that evening with a handsome junior from her chemistry class, was in hysterics. Something bad had happened. Arriving at her side, three students Randall, Andy and Cindy, as they were identified in an explosive Rolling Stone account told The Washington Post that they found their friend in tears. Jackie appeared traumatized, saying her date ended horrifically, with the older student parking his car at his fraternity, asking her to come inside and then forcing her to perform oral sex on five men. In their first interviews about the events of that September 2012 night, the three friends separately told The Post that their recollections of the encounter diverge from how Rolling Stone portrayed the incident in a story about Jackies alleged gang rape at a U-Va. fraternity. The interviews also provide a richer account of Jackies interactions immediately after the alleged attack and suggest that the friends are skeptical of her account. Cardiologists retiring after more than 30 years

O n the first day of his cardiology fellowship at Atlantas Emory University School of Medicine, John Frazier spoke to another man as they walked in the door. The year was 1971. That encounter would result in a 43-year friendship. That friendship would translate into a thriving medical practice and the establishment of a cardiovascular program at Washington Hospital that would make the difference in thousands of lives. Today, the practice Drs. John E. Frazier and Neil J. Hart began in 1982 as Frazier-Hart is flourishing as Washington Health System Cardiovascular Care with a professional staff of nine cardiologists and eight nurse practitioners. Both men, now in their 70s, are retiring this month. They announced their intentions to retire several years ago, giving the practice time to hire a physician and begin transferring patients to other cardiologists, said Kurt Segeleon, office manager. The practice, located at 125 N. Franklin Drive near Consol Energy Park, sees 32,000 patients annually. The doctors retirement has not been without some mixed feelings.
