Taxi driver Gearid 'Skull' Scully was killed in the first fatal road collision of 2014 in Ballina. His partner Lorraine speaks of her grief and the plans they shared for their future together. Video: Niamh Guckian Gearoid Scully, who died in the first fatal road crash of 2014 Terence Beagan, who died in the first fatal road crash of 2014. Gearid Scully was 47-years-old when a Mercedes coupe drove at high speed into his Skoda Superb taxi at around 4.40am on New Years Day 2014, on the N26 Ballina-Foxford road in Co Mayo. The drivers of both vehicles died. Taxi drivers dont always get a good press but in Ballina, a town of some 10,000 people, you wont find anyone who has a bad word to say about Scully, a working-class Dubliner who had moved to the town. He was born Gary Scully in June 1966. His father was Gerard, an electrician, his mother Kathleen. His older sister was named Sharon. Shortly after Garys birth, the family got a house on Cabras Carnlough Road, where another sister, Catherine, was born. A few years later, another, Pamela, arrived much to the chagrin of Gary who really wanted a brother. You can … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Car Crash: The ripple effect of a road collision

Tom Lineman who works at the Broken Jub Pub in Ballina, Co Mayo and was a witness to the crash on New Years Day 2014, which claimed the lives of Gearid Scully and Terence Beagan. Photograph: Keith Heneghan When a road crash occurs, the event touches an extraordinary number of people, both immediately and over a lengthy period of time. This ripple effect belies the momentary attention crashes get in the media and in society at large. In the first instance, there are the persons directly involved in a crash people in vehicles or struck by them. If injured, the consequences range from speedy recovery, in perhaps minutes or hours, to permanent disability, coma, quadriplegia and brain damage. There are those who may dwell for a time on near misses or what did not happen to them: in the case of the New Years Day N26 crash, people such as Tom Lenehan, floor supervisor at the Broken Jug pub, were associated with the victims minutes before the crash. First responders to road crashes will almost invariably include paramedics, fire fighters and garda. Firefighters must remove from the wreckage dead and injured, who may be hysterical with fear and in acute … Continue reading

Stem cell transplant without radiation or chemotherapy pre-treatment shows promise

Posted: Published on December 7th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 7-Dec-2014 Contact: Irene Sege irene.sege@childrens.harvard.edu 617-919-3110 Dana-Farber Cancer Institute @DanaFarber SAN FRANCISCO (DECEMBER 7, 2014) - Researchers at Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center report promising outcomes from a clinical trial with patients with a rare form of bone marrow failure who received a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) after pre-treatment with immunosuppressive drugs only. This is the first trial reporting successful transplant in dyskeratosis congenita (DC) patients without the use of any radiation or conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy beforehand. The trial's data were presented by study authors Leslie Lehmann, MD, and Suneet Agarwal, MD, PhD, of Dana-Farber/Boston Children's, at the 56th annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology (abstract #2941). The data suggest that this immunosuppression-only approach could benefit patients with DC--and, perhaps, other bone marrow failure syndromes--who are at high risk of poor transplant outcomes because they cannot tolerate the toxicity of conventional or even reduced-intensity conditioning. All four participants in the study are alive and well between 10 and 27 months after transplant. None remain dependent on transfusions to maintain blood counts, nor did any experience significant unexpected toxicities or infections during or after transplantation. Were it not for this new regimen, one … Continue reading
