Kate Bushby, leading professor in neuromuscular genetics A leading expert in the North East who has helped pioneer a treatment to tackle a rare muscle wasting condition is urging NHS chiefs to back the groundbreaking drug. This month NHS England is expected to make a decision on whether to fund Translarna, the first treatment developed for sufferers of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The genetic illness is a progressive disease that is caused by mutations within an individuals DNA that prevents the body from producing the protein dystrophin. This protein forms essential connections in the muscle tissue, and without it muscles degenerate and become weak. Translarna is designed to make the body skip genetic mutations when producing dystrophin. It is only suitable for 10-15% of those with the illness living with a nonsense mutation, which is estimated to be approximately 200 patients in the UK. Earlier this year, the European Medicines Agency gave conditional approval for the drug. It is now up to individual EU member states to decide whether to fund the treatment. Kate Bushby, a leading professor of neuromuscular genetics, has been spearheading a clinical trial of Translarna at The John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre, which is part of … Continue reading

Sigma Phi Epsilons to Hold 6th Annual Muscle Walk at UNK – Dec. 4

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

KEARNEY, Neb. Sigma Phi Epsilons 6th Annual Muscle Walk event at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is this Thursday December 4 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). UNK officials say the Muscle Walk, which will take place in the UNK Cushing Fieldhouse, will include games inspired by activities that children with muscular dystrophy experience while attending MDA summer camps. Sigma Phi Epsilon set a goal of $10,000. Members are raising money by collecting donations, proceeds from donations at the event and business sponsorships. UNK officials say the amount raised by the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon will be matched with a donation from Womack Machine & Supply Company in Texas. The proceeds go to the Omaha headquarters for MDA. Part of the money goes to the national research efforts, and part goes to support local families who have one or more members with muscular dystrophy, said Bryce Clay of Columbus, co- chair of Muscle Walk. UNK officials say Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disease that results in muscle weakness and a decrease in muscle mass. MDA supports cutting-edge research, ensures that Americans affected by the disease receive treatment and critical care, and serves as a voice for families with … Continue reading

Curing epilepsy through surgery

Curing epilepsy through surgery By University of Utah Health Care December 2nd, 2014 @ 2:06pm For years, Lisa Clark's life revolved around her seizures. With her brain constantly experiencing its version of an electrical storm, she wasn't able to walk around the block by herself let alone drive. Her personality became more aggressive and she found herself uncharacteristically "jumping down people's throats." "Seizures can change your personality," Clark said. "It can change the way you act toward people." Clark can't estimate how many seizures she had each day there were too many to count. "I was very fearful, especially if I had a seizure around work or family members because I know it was traumatic," said Clark, who had her first seizure around age 30. "I had one at work and a coworker saw it and it upset them. It made them nervous to be around me." Today Clark is seizure-free thanks to little-known epilepsy surgery, which she underwent in 2010 at University of Utah Hospital. Clark no longer feels trapped by not being able to drive or be alone, and her temperament has bounced back. After 10 years of seizures, she's the old Lisa again: friendly, caring and understanding. … Continue reading

View Adobe Acrobat Version|Download Adobe Acrobat Reader Children are in a state of rapid change and growth during their developmental years. Diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders must be viewed with these changes in mind. A Note to Parents There has been public concern over reports that very young children are being prescribed psychotropic medications. The studies to date are incomplete, and much more needs to be learned about young children who are treated with medications for all kinds of illnesses. In the field of mental health, new studies are needed to tell us what the best treatments are for children with emotional and behavioral disturbances. Children are in a state of rapid change and growth during their developmental years. Diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders must be viewed with these changes in mind. While some problems are short-lived and dont need treatment, others are persistent and very serious, and parents should seek professional help for their children. Not long ago, it was thought that many brain disorders such as anxiety disorders, depression, and bipolar disorder began only after childhood. We now know they can begin in early childhood. An estimated 1 in 10 children and adolescents in the United … Continue reading

Autism Speaks: 'Catholic Church Can Be a 'Big Help' in Understanding Autism'

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

Prominent American Couple Praise Vatican For Embracing Autism Community Vatican City, December 03, 2014 (Zenit.org) Deborah Castellano Lubov | 200 hits The co-founders of Autism Speaks have expressed how the Vaticans embracingof people with autism is moving and is what this Pope is all about. While attending the Vaticans first-ever conference on autism, Bob Wright, the former head of NBC Universal, and his wife Suzanne Wright, both of whom are Catholics, spoke on autism and what their organization is doing to support families and encourage research. In this interview with ZENIT, they also discuss how the Catholic Churchs efforts and the Holy Fathers words can do great things for understanding and accepting people with autism. According to Autism Speaks website, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are terms describing a group of complex disorders of brain development. Such disorders are often characterized by difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction, and repetitive behaviors, among others. Inspired by their grandsons diagnosis, the Wrights founded Autism Speaks which is at the forefront of combating autism, a disorder affecting more than 3 million in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide. U.S. government statistics show how the prevalence of this disorder has … Continue reading

Cancer Drug May Play Role In Treating Fragile X

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

A potential cancer treatment may also relieve behavioral symptoms of a condition associated with autism and intellectual disability, researchers say. A drug known as cercosporamide is currently being tested as a treatment for lung cancer and acute myeloid leukemia, but a new study suggests it also holds promise for alleviating symptoms of fragile X syndrome, the most common cause of inherited intellectual disability and a condition that often co-occurs with autism. In the study, scientists identified a molecule called eIF4E that prompts excess protein production in the brains of individuals with fragile X, leading to behavior problems, learning difficulties and other issues. However, treatment with cercosporamide appeared to mitigate the overproduction and reverse behavioral symptoms in mice with fragile X, researchers said in the journal Cell Reports. Our findings open the door to targeted treatments for fragile X syndrome. By designing treatments that block just this pathway, it is hoped that we can limit the potential side effects and develop therapies that are more efficient than general treatment approaches, said Christos Gkogkas of the University of Edinburgh who led the study. Stroke Treatment – Stroke – HealthCommunities.com

Treatment for Stroke Early treatment for stroke can help minimize damage to brain tissue and improve the outcome (prognosis). Treatment depends on whether the stroke is ischemic or hemorrhagic and on the underlying cause of the condition. Hemorrhagic stroke usually requires surgery. The long-term goals of treatment include rehabilitation and prevention of additional strokes. Initial treatment for ischemic stroke involves removing the blockage and restoring blood flow. Tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) is a medication that can break up blood clots and restore blood flow when administered within 3 hours of the event. This medication carries a risk for increased intracranial hemorrhage and is not used for hemorrhagic stroke. Mannitol, a diuretic, may be administered intravenously (through an IV) to reduce intracranial pressure during an ischemic stroke. Antihypertensives such as labetalol (Normodyne) and enalapril (Vasotec) may be used alone or in combination with diuretics to treat high blood pressure. Side effects are usually mild and include dizziness, fatigue, and headache. Antiplatelet agents such as aspirin, clopidogrel bisulfate, and aspirin with dipyridamole (Aggrenox) may be prescribed to reduce the risk for recurrent stroke. Aspirin may also improve the outcome of a stroke when administered within 48 hours. Side effects include stomach pain, … Continue reading

16-year-old on the mend after stroke

Jordan Chaulk and his parents raising awareness for Signs of Stroke campaign Jordan Chaulk is on the road to recovery after having a stroke in January at the age of 15. Photo by Keith Gosse/The Telegram Jordan Chaulk (centre) with his dad, Doug, and mom, Leah, at their home in Kilbride. After almost a year of hospital visits, physical therapy and medication, the Grade 11 student, now 16, cant wait to get back on the ice. Jordan was playing hockey at Twin Rinks in St. Johns in January when he started feeling weak. I noticed during the game I started fumbling the puck, because I couldnt control it right, and I started tripping up skating backwards, which Id never done, really. So I went to the bench, where my dad was coaching, and then I just told him I had a pain in my head and I collapsed, he said. I remember the paramedics and firemen showing up, but after that it was black. His father, Doug Chaulk, said although all the signs were there, he didnt immediately think it was a stroke. My initial reaction was I thought he might have been having a heart attack, because Im not … Continue reading
