Stroke researchers link frontal lesions with improved spatial neglect after prism therapy

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 2-Dec-2014 Contact: Carolann Murphy cmurphy@kesslerfoundation.org 973-324-8382 Kessler Foundation @KesslerFdn West Orange, NJ. December 2, 2014. Stroke researchers have found that the presence of frontal lesions predicts better functional improvement in individuals with spatial neglect who received prism adaptation therapy. "Integrity of medial temporal structures may predict better improvement of spatial neglect with prism adaptation treatment" (doi: 10.1007/s11682-012-9200-5) was published in September in the Neuroimaging and Rehabilitation Special Issue of Brain Imaging & Behavior. The authors are Peii Chen, PhD, Priyanka Shah, and A.M. Barrett, MD, of Kessler Foundation, Kelly M. Goedert of Seton Hall University, and Anne L. Foundas of the University of Missouri. The study was conducted in 21 patients with left-sided spatial neglect, a common complication of right-brain stroke. The participants underwent 2 weeks of prism adaptation treatment, and 4 weeks of followup. Examination of clinical scans showed that 3 participants had frontal lesions; 8 had no frontal lesions. "Functional improvement was seen after treatment," noted Dr. Chen, "but not equally among the patients. Those with lesions of the frontal cortex had much greater improvement than those without these lesions. Further examination using voxel-based lesion-behavior mapping revealed that in this group, the integrity of medial … Continue reading

Dr. Unger, of NuvOx, is a co-inventor on the patent application with Dr. William Culp and Dr. Robert Skinner of the University of Arkansas. The investigators discovered that low doses of dodecafluoropentane emulsion (DDFPe) reduced brain damage from stroke by over 80%. Dr. Culp, Professor of Radiology and Surgery at the University of Arkansas is a pioneer in the treatment of stroke. He received an award from the Journal of Vascular Interventional Radiology, Editors Honoree for Laboratory Investigation for his paper entitled, Dodecafluoropentane emulsion decreases infarct volume in a rabbit ischemic stroke model. Dr. Culp said, I am very excited about the potential of DDFPe to improve outcomes in stroke. TPA is the only FDA approved drug for treating stroke. Nationally only about 6% of patients are treated with tPA because of the narrow time-window in which the drug can be administered to patients. TPA is approved for administration up to only 3-hours … Continue reading

No sacrifice for my child

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

A career woman finds contentment after quitting her job for her daughter's sake. COMMENT by Rafidah Ahmad It has been six years since I resigned from my job as an engineer. The initial reason was that my husband got an offer to further his studies aboard. I was at the peak of my career. I always had this idea about financial freedom and how I could never survive socially by being a housewife. But what needed to be done was done. I knew that going to an industrialised country would be a great opportunity for my then two-year-old daughter, Izdihar Janna, to get better education and treatment for her cerebral palsy. So I resigned. Then, the crazy chase started. We ran around like headless chickens to prepare the necessary documents in order to apply for visas. The requirements were stringent and the documents needed were plenty. Only by August 2008, two months after my resignation, did we manage to send the visa applications. My husband, my then six-year-old son, and I did not have any problem getting the visa approval but Jannas application did not go well. They needed extra documents to support her application because of her disability and … Continue reading

Rotator Cuff Injury | The natural treatment for a torn …

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

Can ginger or turmeric be used to reduce rotator cuff inflammation? Reducing inflammation promotes healing. While I was recovering from a partial rotator cuff tearI wanted to reduce the inflammation in my injured shoulder, but I also wanted to avoid risky anti-inflammatory drugs. So I did some research and decided to try ginger and turmeric for inflammation. Ground turmeric comes from a root that looks similar to ginger. Its a great spice that can be used togetherwith ginger, which has anti-inflammatory properties of its own. Many people would have you believe that in order for turmeric to be effective, you have to take it in capsule form. Particularly people who are selling it in capsule form. This is how I take turmeric I drink half a teaspoon of turmeric in a small glass of apple juice or almond milk twice a day. Im not crazy about the stuff, but my plan was to fix my arm come hell or high water sohey-ho and bottoms up! Apparently some people add it to coffee, vegetable juice, or smoothies. I havent tried that yetbut no doubt I will. Given thata teaspoon of turmericis not considered a lot, I also sprinkle it in my … Continue reading

My Voice: Side effects of radiation treatment for head and …

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

Radiationtherapy(RT) is often used to treat head and neck cancer. It can be used as the only treatment, in combination with chemotherapy (chemoradiation therapy), or after surgery (adjuvant radiation therapy). The goal of radiation therapy is to kill cancercells. Because these cells divideand grow at a faster rate than normal cells they are more likely to be destroyed by radiation. In contrast although they may be damaged, healthycells generally recover. Unfortunately radiation treatment causes short and long term side effects. RT can be administered in several ways: 1. Organ preservation: Radiation is aimed at the tumor site (with or without chemotherapy) is used in an attempt to cure the disease without surgically removing the larynx. However, this is not always an option because of the size and location of the tumor and the recommendation is to proceed directly to surgery. 2. "Palliative treatment": Radiation (with or without chemotherapy) is given in an attempt to prolong life when the tumor is too large and/or inoperable and cure is highly unlikely. 3. Radiation after surgery:Radiation is given after surgery to destroy any local residual cancer cells that may spread to other organs such as the lung, liver, or brain. Types of radiation therapy If RT … Continue reading

Treatment Can Help People of All Ages Speak With Increased Fluency

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

EARLY TREATMENTis available for children with speech disorders. Above, students in a speech therapy class share their questions about insects on a board in front of the classroom. LAKELAND | When in a smooth, sultry voice, Marilyn Monroe sang "Happy Birthday" to President Kennedy in 1962, it was certainly not apparent that a speech disorder had been part of her past. Similarly, as Bruce Willis delivered countless one-liners in five "Die Hard" movies through three decades, few fans knew that classmates had taunted Willis as a schoolboy due to the same disorder. Stuttering is a speech disorder that affects the normal flow of speech for nearly three million Americans. While stuttering does not discriminate based on age, it most often affects children developing language skills between the ages of 2 and 5. In Polk County, Child Find is a federally-funded center that provides screening and information about programs available within the community for children ages 3 to 5. The program can assist in placing children in appropriate education programs that may help treat their stuttering. Though there is no cure for stuttering, treatment can help people of all ages speak with increased fluency and reduced frequency of disrupted speech. Early … Continue reading

New drug promises to reverse the progression of Multiple Sclerosis

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

Researchers are zeroing in on what looks like an effective treatment for the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. Teams from UC Riverside and New York's Rockefeller University have both used the same compound, indazole chloride, to successfully reverse the progression of MS in mice. The drug appears to be able to stimulate the regeneration of the myelin sheath the nerve pathway coating that is progressively destroyed as MS attacks the nervous system. MS affects around 400,000 people in the United States alone, and some 2.5 million around the world, according to Healthline. It's a debilitating disease in which the body's immune system begins to attack its own nervous system, gradually breaking down the protective cover called the myelin sheath, which coats the axons of nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. As this demyelination progresses, patients begin to slowly experience the breakdown of their nervous system sensation, vision and motor control begin to slowly degenerate, and permanent paralysis can be the end result. It's a horrible sentence. One well known quirk of the disease is that female sufferers seem to have a reversal of their MS symptoms during the third trimester of pregnancy. This reversal has them feeling great for … Continue reading
