Pharmacy would be good for Workington estate, claims partner

Posted: Published on July 28th, 2012

Last updated at 19:45, Thursday, 26 July 2012 The company behind plans for a new pharmacy on a Workington estate met this week with concerned residents to discuss its plans. Saeed Ltd will transform Mills in Moorclose into the chemists but its proposals have been criticised by some residents who fear it would lead to drug addicts hanging around. Zubair Malik, one of the chains partners, attended a neighbourhood forum meeting on Tuesday to reassure people. He said the pharmacy would offer a methadone service, and drug users would be supervised when taking their prescription on site. He said any trouble would be reported to the NHS and user's medication would be stopped or they would be asked to attend another pharmacy to take their medication. Mr Malik added: I will treat those patients with the same level of respect as I treat all my patients. I want to help those people and to help them move forward with their lives and offering this service will help them do this. The service will only be offered to people living in the Moorclose area, not the whole of Workington. He said the new pharmacy would be a benefit to the community … Continue reading

Public release date: 27-Jul-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Cathy Lawhon clawhon@uci.edu 949-824-1151 University of California - Irvine Irvine, Calif., July 26, 2012 Efforts to begin human clinical trials using stem cells to treat cervical spinal cord injury in the U.S. received a $20 million boost Thursday, July 26, from the state's stem cell research funding agency, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The award will be shared by Aileen Anderson and Brian Cummings, associate professors of physical medicine & rehabilitation at UC Irvine's Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center, and Nobuko Uchida of StemCells Inc. in Newark, Calif. Anderson and Cummings proved that transplanting human neural stem cells discovered and developed by Stem Cells, Inc. into rodents with thoracic spinal cord injury could restore mobility. The CIRM award announced Thursday will fund the collection of data necessary to establish human clinical trials in the U.S. "Our therapeutic approach is based on the hypothesis that transplanted human neural stem cells integrate into the injured spinal cord to repair the protective myelin sheath and spinal circuitry," Anderson said. "Any therapy that can partially reverse some of the effects of spinal cord injury could substantially change the quality … Continue reading

The bizarre side effects of synthetic drugs

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2012

TEMPE, Ariz. - Police say drugs like "bath salts" can mimic the effects of crack cocaine and even meth. We've had a number of incidents involving bath salts recently, and one valley police department is seeing more and more cases of bath salts, enough to call it an epidemic. Just this week, Tempe police have encountered suspects in three separate cases who told them they were on bath salts. What's really scary about this stuff for them is that because the drug is modified so often -- sometimes they're not sure what they're dealing with. The behavior is bizarre. You may remember this case from last month -- 38-year-old Chris Brown, high on bath salts, took a swim in Tempe Town Lake naked. Every time firefighters got close to rescue him, he would swim away. "We've had several cases of individuals becoming violent," says Lt. Noah Johnson, Special Investigations Bureau. Just this week, rescue crews fished out a 33-year-old swimmer from Tempe Town Lake. He was rambling and incoherent and admitted he'd ingested bath salts. He also told police there was another swimmer with him in the water. Crews searched for hours, but never found anyone. Lt. Noah Johnson tells … Continue reading

McKesson to Pay States $151 Million to Settle Drug Pricing Allegations

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2012

By Kristin Jones McKesson Corp. (MCK) has agreed to pay California and 29 other states a total of $151 million to settle allegations that it inflated prescription drug prices, causing states' Medicaid programs to overpay pharmacy reimbursements by millions of dollars, according to the California Department of Justice. The payment is in addition to an April settlement that had McKesson paying more than $190 million to the federal government to resolve similar claims. McKesson wasn't immediately available to comment, but has previously said that it didn't violate any laws or manipulate drug prices. The states alleged that the drug wholesaler deliberately inflated average wholesale drug prices it reported to First Data Bank, a publisher of drug prices, by as much as 25%. McKesson's actions caused the state of California to overpay on branded prescription drugs from August 2001 through December 2009. California'sMedicaid program, known as Medi-Cal, sets the reimbursement rates for pharmacies based on reported wholesale drug prices. California's recovery of the settlement is roughly $23.6 million. Along with the District of Columbia, the other 29 states involved in the settlement include New York, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. McKesson has continued to see strong performance in its U.S. distribution business. It … Continue reading

How cops calculate street value of drugs

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2012

Calculating the so-called street value of drugs is like trying to see into the future with a calculator. Experienced narcotics cops have a good idea of how drugs are packaged and sold to consumers, and they use that information to guesstimate how much a large shipment of drugs might have been worth down the line if it hadn't been confiscated. That usually involves dividing kilos and pounds into grams or smaller quantities then multiplying that by the retail value of each bag. Some cops, figuring that the drugs will be "cut" with other substances, use another multiplier. The numbers get real high, real fast. But it's far from an exact science. It doesn't account for drugs that might have otherwise been consumed, confiscated, or sold at larger quantities for instance, an "8-ball" of cocaine, or about 3.5 grams instead of a gram or smaller. Those variables have the potential to significantly alter the "street value," the number that often winds up in news reports. It bears little resemblance to what the bust cost the drug-distribution system. "I'm not saying they're wrong, it's just their way of looking at it," David Leff, a narcotics expert who frequently testifies in court, said … Continue reading

India considers price controls for patented drugs

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2012

By Kaustubh Kulkarni MUMBAI (Reuters) - India is planning to rein in prices of expensive patented drugs to make medicines affordable to its predominantly poor population, a top government official said on Friday. The move is almost certain to draw the ire of global drugmakers like Pfizer (NYS:PFE - News), GlaxoSmithKline (LSE:GSK.L - News) and Merck (NYS:MRK - News), which spend billions of dollars researching new treatments and are hoping for huge growth for branded medicines in emerging economies such as India. "A committee has already finalised a proposal and we will put it out in the public domain in a month or so," Dilsher Singh Kalha, secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals at the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, told reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference. "There could be reference pricing system (for patented drugs) or maybe fixed-pricing, but a final decision has not been taken," Kalha said. GRAPHIC: Generics in India: http://link.reuters.com/sug29s The step would be the latest by India to make medicines more affordable after it announced earlier this month it would implement a $5.4 billion plan to provide free generic medicines to its people. Currently, patented drugs are free of price controls, but there … Continue reading
