Posted: Published on July 27th, 2012

advertisement A PARALYMPIC athlete from the 2012 GB team has been made a vice-president of The Children's Trust in Tadworth. Sprinter Sophia Warner, who has cerebral palsy, explained she has a special connection to the trust and her treatment helped her get where she is today. Sophia, from Dorking, said: "It's a charity that is very close to my heart as it is where I had my treatment as a child. Little did I know then what that treatment would ultimately help me achieve." The 38-year-old mum-of-two received specialist treatment and therapy at the trust in the 1980s when it was part of Great Ormond Street Hospital. She said: "I have always remembered my visits as a child with great fondness, as there was and still is a lovely, warm atmosphere. Now it's time for me to give something back to The Children's Trust and help others reach their full potential. Im on a mission to educate people about cerebral palsy. Attitudes to disabled athletes have moved on a bit, but so little is known about cerebral palsy. Sophia only started her training when she was 19 and following her graduation from University, she successfully carved a career in marketing … Continue reading

Macon man claims he suffered brain injury during arrest, sues Macon police

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2012

A Macon man has filed a lawsuit against three Macon police officers, Police Chief Mike Burns and Bibb County Sheriff Jerry Modena, claiming he suffered a permanent brain injury during his arrest and was later deprived of medical care at the county jail. Jimmy Brewster, of Vineville Avenue, alleges he was sitting on his friends porch on Columbus Road at 1:20 a.m. on July 22, 2010, when police came into the yard, according to a lawsuit filed Monday in Bibb County Superior Court. According to the lawsuit: Officer Clayton Sutton pointed a gun at Brewster and demanded that he come to him. Sutton threatened to shoot Brewster if he refused. Brewster told the officer hed done nothing wrong and walked toward the door to the house. Brewster, 48, alleges that officer Lisa Sapp grabbed Brewster and kept him from going inside the house. While Sapp held Brewster, Sutton struck him between two and four times in the head with a flashlight, the lawsuit alleges. Police took Brewster into custody and asked if he wanted to go to the hospital. Thinking he just had a bad headache, Brewster declined help, according to the lawsuit. He was charged with misdemeanor obstruction, giving … Continue reading

European Commission Approves Eisai´s Fycompa® (perampanel)

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2012

HATFIELD, England, July 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- First region in the world to approve this new class of treatment for partial epilepsy The European Commission (EC) has issued Marketing Authorisation Approval for the use of Fycompa(R) (perampanel) as an adjunctive treatment of partial-onset seizures, with or without secondarily generalised seizures, in people with epilepsy aged 12 years and older.[1] With the ECs approval, the European Union is the first region in the world to approve Eisais perampanel. Discovered and developed by Eisai in Europe and Japan, perampanel is currently the only approved anti-epileptic drug (AED) to selectively target AMPA receptors, which play a central role in seizure generation and spread.[2] Epileptic seizures are primarily mediated by the neurotransmitter glutamate.[3] As an AMPA receptor antagonist, perampanel selectively targets the transmission of seizures by blocking the effects of glutamate. This mechanism of action, which is different to that of current AEDs, means that perampanel is the first approved AED in this new class of treatment.[4, 5] Perampanel is the first treatment to exhibit clinical efficacy in Phase III clinical trials against partial-onset seizures by selectively (non-competitively) blocking postsynaptic AMPA receptor-mediated excitatory neurotransmission.[6, 7] The worldwide supply of perampanel will be packaged and … Continue reading

Precision StemCell's Revolutionary InVivo Adult Stem Cell Reprogramming Procedure Shows Potential for Treating ALS

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2012

GULF SHORES, Ala., July 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Eight years ago, Frank Orgel, a former NFL football player and college coach, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Orgel's quality of life declined to the point that he could not move his left arm or leg, walk or even stand on his own. But, within a few days of undergoing a new stem cell reprogramming technique performed by Dr. Jason R. Williams at Precision StemCell (http://www.precisionstemcell.com), Orgel's constant muscle fasciculation (muscle twitching) lessened significantly. Within weeks, he was able to walk in a pool of water and stand unassisted. The technique performed on Orgel is InVivo reprogramming, which reprograms adult stem cells into neural stem cells. The procedure involves harvesting adult stem cells from the patient's own fat, which Dr. Williams obtains via minimally invasive liposuction, and then using image-guided therapy to insert the stem cells into the patient's spine. For three to five days after the procedure, Dr. Williams places the patient on an oral medication that, as laboratory research has shown, causes stem cells to reprogram, converting them into neural stem cells. "We are the only facility in the United States performing … Continue reading

UC Davis receives $53 million in grants for stem cell research

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2012

UC Davis will receive grants totaling $53 million for stem cell research after a vote today by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine awarding the money. The grants are a major milestone for the university, which had received $73 million in past funding from the agency. "We're here to bring this new era of medicine to patients," UC Davis stem cell program director Jan Nolta said. Nolta will oversee the three grant projects for Huntington's disease, limb ischemia and osteoporosis. UC Davis researchers said they are close to finding effective treatments for the diseases. Neurologist Dr. Vicki Wheelock, who will head the Huntington's project, said the grants wouldn't have been possible without the advocacy of patients and their families. "They really rallied to secure the funding," she said. "This will be for the families." Copyright The Sacramento Bee. All rights reserved. Researchers work on stem cell therapy for heart failure

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2012

3:40 p.m. PDT, July 26, 2012 SAN DIEGO -- Researchers from San Diego State University's Heart Institute rejuvenated damaged cardiac tissue removed from older heart-failure patients, using modified stem cells, the university announced Thursday. University officials said the research could eventually lead to new treatments for heart-failure patients. "Since patients with heart failure are normally elderly, their cardiac stem cells aren't very healthy,'' said Sadia Mohsin, a post-doctoral research scholar and one of the study's authors. "We modified these biopsied stem cells and made them healthier. It's like turning back the clock so these cells can thrive again.'' Researchers used stem cells modified with a protein called PIM-1 to increase the activity of the enzyme telomerase, which can lengthen telomeres. Telomeres --- DNA sequences on the ends of chromosomes -- keep the chromosomes from losing DNA base pairs during cellular replication but lose base pairs themselves during the process. If telomeres become too short, the chromosome can't replicate. According to Moshin, modifying aged cardiac cells added to the cells' ability to regenerate damaged heart muscle. "This is an especially exciting finding for heart failure patients,'' Moshin said in a statement. "Right now we can only offer medication, heart transplantation or … Continue reading
