Posted: Published on July 24th, 2012

Brooks, Coulson Charged in News Corp. Hacking Probe By David Armstrong - 2012-07-24T04:01:00Z Soon after Peter Price arrived at the Florida Institute for Neurologic Rehabilitation to recover from a brain injury, he pleaded for a rescue. Jess, they beat me up, Price told his sister, Jessica Alopaeus, in May 2009. You have to get me out of here. Staffers at his new home held him down and punched him in the face and groin, Price said. When Alopaeuss efforts to transfer him stalled, Price said his desperation led him to a step aimed at speeding his release. He swallowed five fish hooks and 22 AA batteries hed picked up during a patient outing at Wal-Mart. After emergency surgery to remove the objects, he was allowed to transfer to another facility. Residents at the Florida Institute have often been abused, neglected and confined, according to 20 current and former patients and their family members, criminal charges, civil complaints and advocates for the disabled. These sources and over 2,000 pages of court and medical records, police reports, state investigations and autopsies contain an untold history of violence and death at the secluded institute known as FINR, which is located amid cattle ranches … Continue reading

DNA race to unlock ageing secrets

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2012

24 July 2012 Last updated at 02:28 ET By Helen Briggs BBC News A race to unlock genetic clues behind living to 100 is set to begin next year, after a US team announced it will compete for the $10m Genomics X Prize. Genetic entrepreneur Dr Jonathan Rothberg is entering the challenge to identify genes linked to a long, healthy life. His team - and any other contenders - will be given 30 days to work out the full DNA code of 100 centenarians at a cost of no more than $1,000 per genome. The race will start in September 2013. Under the rules of the Archon Genomics X Prize, teams have until next May to register for the competition. Dr Rothberg's team from Life Technologies Corporation in California is the first to formally enter the race. Being able to sequence the full human genome at a cost of $1,000 or less is regarded as a milestone in science. It is seen as the threshold at which DNA sequencing technology becomes cheap enough to be used widely in medicine, helping in diagnosis and in matching drugs to a patient's genetic make-up. If they can do a human genome in two … Continue reading

Not having child does not prove impotency: High Court

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2012

Observing that there is a marked difference between 'infertility' and 'impotency', Bombay High Court today set aside a 1994 order of divorce. The family court, in October 1994, had granted divorce to the husband (then 42 years old) on the ground that the wife (then 45 years old) was impotent, a valid ground for divorce as contemplated by Section 12 (1) (a) of Hindu Marriage Act. The wife challenged the divorce order in High Court. The division bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and A R Joshi today set aside the divorce, observing that family court had erred in equating infertility with impotency. "The family court held that inability to give birth to a child presupposed that woman is impotent. This view taken by the family court is erroneous and it is wrong in accepting infertility of a woman equivalent to her impotency," the bench said. The family court had said that even after 16 years of marriage, there was no child, which was sufficient to establish that wife was impotent. "We must say that the family court has definitely committed an error in arriving at such a conclusion and treating impotency and infertility at par. There is a marked … Continue reading

UPDATE 2-U.S. FDA OKs Forest/Almirall drug for smoker's cough

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2012

(Adds background on Forest, drug side effects, competitors, shares) WASHINGTON, July 23 (Reuters) - Forest Laboratories Inc's inhaled treatment for smoker's cough, commonly called COPD and the fourth leading killer in America, has been approved by U.S. drug regulators, bolstering the company's plans to grow profits through new medicines. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the twice-daily drug, to be sold as Tudorza Pressair, to treat symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a serious lung disease that makes breathing difficult and is often caused by cigarette smoking. Forest developed the drug, which loosens the muscles around the lungs to improve airflow, with Spanish company Almirall SA and will market it in the United States. "The availability of long-term maintenance drugs for COPD provides additional treatment options for the millions of people who suffer with this debilitating disease," said Dr. Curtis Rosebraugh, director of the FDA's Office of Drug Evaluation II. About 14 million people in the United States and 64 million worldwide have COPD, which worsens with age and can persist even if smokers with the disease quit the habit. The FDA was originally supposed to decide on the drug by April 23, but delayed the decision to … Continue reading

Reformulated Oxycontin Leads Drug Abusers To Opana

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2012

(credit: Darren McCollester/Getty Images) By John Ostapkovich PHILADELPHIA (CBS) Law enforcement agencies are on alert for people who are willing to acquire a powerful painkiller called Opana at point of gun. Opana is on opioid, like Oxycontin, says Pharmacy Doctor Bruce Canaday, department chair at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and it has gained traction among drug abusers. One reason, Canaday says, is the drug Oxycontin, once highly-valued by junkies, has changed. Not too long ago, they reformulated their product so that now if you try to open it up or crush it or mix it with water, it turns to a viscous jelly-like substance which is very hard to snort of shoot. And, that has drug abusers looking for Opana. There was a relatively rapid wholesale shift in drug abuse from that product which was very difficult to abuse now to the Opana, which was not now not difficult to abuse, and its also much more dangerous, because its much more potent than Oxycontin was, so 40 mg of one doesnt equal 40 mg of the other. The maker of Opana has also reformulated the pill to deter abuse, and there have been pharmacy stickups in the … Continue reading

Australian drug mule gets 8 years in Bali jail

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2012

Indonesian prosecutors may appeal the sentence given to an Australian drug mule jailed for attempting to smuggle hashish and methamphetamines into Bali hidden in his stomach. Edward Myatt was jailed for eight years on Monday in a ruling that shocked prosecutors, who had demanded a sentence of 15 years. The 54-year-old Ballarat-born man was also fined 1.5 billion rupiah ($A155,000). If he fails to pay the fine, Myatt will be required to serve an additional four months in jail. The decision is another major relief for Myatt, who was indicted on three charges, including one count of trafficking, which carries a maximum penalty of death. He was stopped as he arrived at Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport in February on a flight from India after he aroused the suspicions of Customs officers. He was later found to have swallowed more than 70 plastic casings containing 1.1kg of hashish and four grams of methamphetamine, otherwise known as ice. It had been expected he would receive a similar sentence to Sydney-man Michael Sacatides, who earlier this year was given 18 years for attempting to smuggle 1.7kg of ice into Bali from Thailand. But chief judge Gunawan Tri Budiono said that while the evidence … Continue reading

Many Medicaid Patients Skip Drugs That Could Prevent Heart Trouble

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2012

FRIDAY, July 20 (HealthDay News) -- Many Medicaid recipients with chronic health conditions that can lead to heart disease -- diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol -- do not take their prescribed medications, a new study has found. The researchers said failure to take medications leads to higher costs of care and an increased risk of hospitalization and even death. They looked at 2008 and 2009 data from more than 150,000 Medicaid patients in New York City, aged 20 to 64, and found that only 63 percent of those with the three chronic conditions took their prescribed medications. Older patients and white and Asian patients were most likely to take their medications, while black and Hispanic patients were least likely. "The outcome of this study is concerning, as it shows a large number of people with chronic conditions that lead to cardiovascular disease aren't taking prescribed medications, which could prevent a potential stroke or heart attack," lead author Dr. Kelly Kyanko, an instructor in the department of population health at the NYU Langone Medical Center, said in a center news release. "We hope these findings will help local health authorities in the New York City area address this problem … Continue reading

Missing meds force pharmacy to close

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2012

Chris Cole Pharmacy Closing Chris Cole Pharmacy has been a fixture in Arcadia for more than three decades, but in just a few days, the drug store will be history. "Our customers are very upset about the fact it's closing down," said owner Lee Brown. Brown says she has no choice but to close it down thanks to five women accused of stealing and selling more than 10-thousand pills. "They were waiting until the pharmacist went to sleep at night and going in and getting his key," said Bienville Parish Sheriff John Ballance. Investigators say the three main culprits are the pharmacist's step-daughter, Diana Lofton, and her daughters, Venus Lofton and India Feazel. Sheriff Ballance says the women also stole the pharmacist's code to the alarm system. Authorities say they broke into the pharmacy several times between June and July. The stolen pills were said to be sold for as much as ten dollars each in Bienville, Claiborne, Lincoln, Bossier and Caddo parishes. Also charged in connection are Christen Murphy and Alice Goodwin. Ballance says when Goodwin was arrested for an unrelated charge in Webster parish, she started singing like a bird. One month later, deputies had a flock of … Continue reading
