Propecia Study Finds Men Could Suffer Long-Lasting Sexual Problems from Baldness Drug

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

A new study is reporting that sexual side effects that sometimes accompany the use of Propecia could be long lasting. Propecia sexual side effects often include erectile dysfunction, low libido, trouble having an orgasm, and shrinking and painful genitals Propecia (finasteride 1 mg) and Proscar (finasteride 5 mg) belong to a class of drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, or 5-ARIs. Propecia is approved to treat male pattern baldness, while Proscar is used for enlarged prostate. Both drugs work by preventing the conversion of androgen testosterone to DHT, a hormone critical to male sexual performance. In April, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) ordered new warnings for the Propecia and Proscar labels detailing possible long-lasting male sexual side effects associated with the drug. As we reported previously, Merck changed the Propecia label in Europe several years ago to warn that the drug could lead to permanent erectile dysfunction. But until the FDA ordered the April label change, warnings provided to U.S. users of the drug suggested that these problems typically resolve. This study, which appears in Journal of Sexual Medicine, surveyed 54 men under age 40 who reported experiencing side effects for three months or more after taking Propecia … Continue reading

Propecia Problems: Baldness Drug Linked with Long-Lasting Sexual Side Effects

The adverse side effects of the anti-baldness drug could last for months or even years for some men Steve Wisbauer / Getty Images In April, theFood and Drug Administration (FDA) updated the warning to finasteride, Merck & Co.s drug marketed to treat both male pattern baldness (Propecia) and enlarged prostate (Proscar). The new warnings noted that the sexual side effects associated with the medication, including problems with libido, ejaculations and orgasm, could last even after patients stop taking the drug. Now a new study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine finds that side effects may not only continue after stopping finasteride, but they may last for months or even years. In the study, Dr. Michael Irwig of George Washington University and his colleagues surveyed 54 men under age 40 who reported experiencing side effects for three months or more after stopping the medication Propecia. The patients reported a variety of sexual problems including erectile dysfunction, low libido, trouble having an orgasm, and shrinking and painful genitals. Some men also reported neurological problems like depression, anxiety and cognitive haziness. For 96% of the men, the sexual problems lasted more than a year after they quit using the drug. None of … Continue reading

New Federal Ban on Synthetic Drugs Already Obsolete

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

Two synthetic drug blends tested in the last week by AIT labs. The active compounds, UR-144 and XLR-11, are not covered by the federal ban. Photos: Kevin Shanks/AIT Labs A federal ban on synthetic drugs, signed into law by President Obama on July 9, was obsolete before the ink of his signature dried. Drug formulations not covered by the laws language, and almost certainly synthesized in direct response to legal pressure, are already on sale. If synthetics are supposed to be part of the War on Drugs, then this battle may already be lost. There are several compounds out there now, in mixtures that Ive tested myself, that would not fall under this ban, said Kevin Shanks, a forensic toxicologist at AIT Laboratories, an Indiana-based chemical testing company. The law just cant seem to keep up. The new law, officially known as the Synthetic Drug Abuse Prevention Act of 2012, comes in response to the growing popularity of compounds designed by chemists to mimic the effects of various illegal substances, particularly marijuana and amphetamines. Sold legally for nominally non-consumptive purposes brand names include Spice incense, Ivory Wave bath salts and Crystal Clean pipe cleaner the synthetics are often more potent … Continue reading

Abuse-Proof Oxycontin Just Led Addicts to Other Drugs

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

Abuse-deterrent reformulations of widely misused prescription painkillers may not be the "magic bullets" many hoped they would be in the battle against addiction In August 2010, the maker of the prescription painkiller OxyContin released an abuse-resistant formulation of the drug to deter addicts from crushing it and inhaling or injecting it. The new pill had a dramatic effect: OxyContin went from being the primary drug of abuse for 36% of prescription-drug misusers to just 13% about 21 months later, according to a letter published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Problem is, this didnt mean that drug users quit when they stopped getting high on OxyContin. Instead, they simply switched drugs. As abuse of OxyContin (oxycodone) fell, other opioids moved in to fill the gap: drug users choosing high-potency fentanyl and hydromorphone rose from 20% to 32%, according to the NEJM survey. When asked about the drugs used to get high in the past 30 days at least once, OxyContin fell from 47% of respondents to 30%, while heroin use nearly doubled. As USA Today reports, the opioid Opana (oxymorphone), which was introduced in 2006 without a mechanism to deter misuse, is now more commonly used than … Continue reading

(ACT; OTCBB: ACTC), a leader in the field of regenerative medicine, today announced treatment of the fourth patient, the first in the second patient cohort, in its U.S. clinical trial for Stargardts Macular Dystrophy (SMD). The surgery was performed on Wednesday, July 11 at Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia, by a surgical team lead by Carl D. Regillo, MD, FACS, director of the Wills Eye Clinical Retina Research Unit, attending surgeon in the Wills Eye Retina Service at the Wills Eye Institute, and professor of ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University. In keeping with trial protocol, the patient was injected with 100,000 human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, as compared with the 50,000 cell dose used in the three patients of the first cohort. The outpatient transplantation surgery was performed successfully and the patient is recovering uneventfully. It is very gratifying to have second cohort, higher-dosage patient treatment underway in our U.S. clinical trial for SMD, commented Gary Rabin, chairman and CEO of ACT. We are also pleased to be working with Dr. Regillo and his team at Wills Eye Institute, a truly first-class institution that is ranked as one of … Continue reading

Surgeon uses adult stem cell therapy in spinal fusion clinical trial

Top Stories Surgeon uses adult stem cell therapy in spinal fusion clinical trial The Argonaut Interview: Dr. Hyun Bae By Gary Walker Stem cell research remains a controversial topic throughout much of the nation, for religious as well as ethical reasons. Embryonic stem cells, which can differentiate into extraembryonic tissues and are derived from human embryos, are a particularly hot-button topic. Scientists and researchers around the globe have been exploring the potential that adult regenerative stem cells could have on patients suffering from a variety of ailments, including spinal cord injuries, heart conditions and diabetes. While stem cell research - especially clinic studies involving human embryos - remains highly politicized, Californians have shown their support for the controversial therapy. Voters approved a 2004 initiative that allocated $3 million toward human embryonic stem cell research. Proposition 71 made California the largest state-funded scientific research initiative in the United States. Three years ago, President Barack Obama signed an executive order that reversed President George W. Bushs earlier policy of prohibiting the use of federal tax dollars for embryonic stem cell research. Unlike embryonic cells, the use of adult stem cells in research and therapy is much less controversial. Dr. Hyun Bae, a … Continue reading

Sugarland cosmetic dentist Dr. Jue from A Beautiful Smile at Lake Pointe becomes the first provider of dental stem cell therapy in Fort Bend County through Store-A-Tooth. Sugarland, TEXAS (PRWEB) July 10, 2012 Sugarland cosmetic dentist Dr. Lance Jue from A Beautiful Smile at Lake Pointe has become the first provider of dental stem cell therapy in Fort Bend County. Dental stem cell therapy saves stem cells from baby teeth, teeth removed for orthodontic reasons and wisdom teeth to help with future infections, injuries or diseases. Dr. Jue works with Store-A-Tooth, which provides a Tooth Transport Kit, collects and validates the stems cells that are collected from the tooth. The cells are kept frozen until the day they are needed, at which time they are sent to the patients healthcare provider. Dental stem cells have been used to treat periodontal disease, diabetes, spinal cord injury, stroke and liver disease. Stem cells are different from other cells because they can transform into many different cell types and divide more than other types of cells. Dental stem cells are particularly effective because they replicate faster than stem cells take from other body tissues. The initial cost of the Store-A-Tooth service is one-third … Continue reading

Cells derived from debrided burn tissue may be useful for tissue engineering

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

Public release date: 11-Jul-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: David Eve celltransplantation@gmail.com Cell Transplantation Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair Putnam Valley, NY. (July 11, 2012) A research team in the Netherlands has found that cells from burn eschar, the non-viable tissue remaining after burn injury and normally removed to prevent infection, can be a source of mesenchymal cells that may be used for tissue engineering. Their study compared the efficacy of those cells to adipose (fat)-derived stem cells and dermal fibroblasts in conforming to multipotent mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) criteria. Their study is published in the current issue of Cell Transplantation (21:5), now freely available on-line at http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/cog/ct/. "In this study we used mouse models to investigate whether eschar-derived cells fulfill all the criteria for multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells as formulated by the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT)," said study co-author Dr. Magda M.W. Ulrich of the Association of Dutch Burn Centres, The Netherlands. "The study also assessed the differentiation potential of MSCs isolated from normal skin tissue and adipose tissue and compared them to cells derived from burn eschar." According to the researchers, advances in burn treatment have meant that the percentage of … Continue reading

Baldness Drug's Sex Effects Possibly Permanent, Study Says

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

Kevin Malley was almost 30, and he was starting to lose his hair. He went to his doctor to see if there was a way to keep from going bald, and his doctor prescribed Propecia. "I looked young for my age, so I wanted to hold off my hair loss for a little bit," Malley said. "I didn't plan on taking Propecia for more than a year." Malley started taking the drug in May 2011, and by October he was completely impotent and had no sex drive whatsoever. His body changed, even his genitals shrank, and he slipped into a mental fog that he just couldn't clear. His doctor told him the side effects would go away if he stopped taking the drug, so he did. But nothing changed. "I kept expecting the side effects to go away, but they did not, they only got worse," he said. Malley is not alone: A new study published today in the Journal of Sexual Medicine suggests that for some men, the sexual side effects of Propecia may last for months to years, even after they stop taking the drug. Researchers from George Washington University interviewed 54 men under age 40 who reported … Continue reading
