Cheaper Drugs Allow Greater Treatment

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

PEPFAR, the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, is responsible for getting millions of people on treatment. But researchers say it was not until the program started using cheaper generic drugs that great strides were made against the epidemic. PEPFAR is considered one of the hallmarks of President George W. Bushs time in office. Its goal was to transform HIV/AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable chronic disease. And for millions of people around the world, thats now the case as the program continues under President Obama. However, Dr. Kartik Venkatesh said when PEPFAR began it was hampered by the high cost of brand name antiretroviral drugs. Early on, PEPFAR wasnt able to reach nearly as many individuals because if the proprietary versions of these drugs were going to be used, simply, with the limited budget only so many could be reached. However, [in] the real success of PEPFAR, a significant factor has been the procurement and use of generic drugs, he said/ Venkatesh is the lead author of a study by Brown University researchers on the success of PEPFAR. He said, The question was if were providing patented drugs to American patients, we should be providing the same … Continue reading

Aussie expert closer to HIV cure

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

Australian scientist Prof Alan Trounson is working on a cure for HIV using stem cells. Source: AP A WORLD-renowned Australian stem cell expert working on a cure for HIV says their research is about to progress to human trials. Professor Alan Trounson heads the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, which is advancing towards a cure for conditions including HIV and diabetes. Prof Trounson, the former director of Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories in Melbourne, said the research institute's work towards a HIV cure was about to enter human trials. He said if the trials were successful further research would be needed to modify the technology so it could be affordably used where it is needed most, in Africa. "I want the HIV work to go globally because it shouldn't be restricted to patients in Western (countries)," Prof Trounson said. "We're going to have to modify some of that further research to get it into a suitable treatment that we can use in Africa. "I'm very hopeful that the industry will do that. "We have to try and make these as available to people as possible." Prof Trounson said the HIV research uses blood stem cells to mimic a gene … Continue reading

South Florida doctor pioneers penis enlargement procedure

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

MIAMI - A South Florida doctor pioneers a non-surgical approach for penis enlargement. "The key thing is right here, a lot of men think they're small or inadequate," said Dr. Victor Loria, a cosmetic surgeon. Dr. Loria is helping men feel more adequate with his non-surgical method. "I feel like in a year or two this will be the gold standard for girth and glands enlargement," he said. Using a small cannula, Dr. Loria injects the area with silicone or artefill, products approved for filling facial wrinkles. "The material actually converts to collagen. The body sees it and converts it to collagen. So 95 percent or more of that new material under the skin is their own body," said Dr. Loria. Injections of silicone or artefill carry a 10 percent risk of complications, including pain, bruising, or lumpiness in the area. "Once it's injected, the silicone or the artefill is permanent, which means that if for whatever reason you don't like the way it looks or feels, you're kind of stuck with it. It's very difficult to remove, if al all," said Dr. Michael Salzhauer, a plastic surgeon. Matt felt like it was a chance worth taking. View post: South … Continue reading

Coping with problems in the bedroom

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

Many of the men I see come to me because they are experiencing erectile dysfunction problems. The men, who vary in age, had previously taken their ability to perform in the bedroom for granted and have trouble understanding why this is happening to them now. A common cause of erectile dysfunction, in young men, is performance anxiety. They experience great fear every time they engage in sexual intercourse, especially if it is with a new partner. They terrify themselves with thoughts of: "will I get hard enough", "will I keep it up", "how long will I last" and "will she tell her friends?" These are common performance anxiety thoughts, but they can cause men to lose their erections immediately. This, in turn, exacerbates their anxiety and leads to troublesome feelings of sadness, disappointment, guilt and shame. The more this happens, the more these men lose their confidence. They may start avoiding sex or become so traumatised they stop having sex all together. This cycle often continues until it is addressed. To break the cycle, they first need to admit there is a problem. Read the original post: Coping with problems in the bedroom … Continue reading

Pluristem’s Unique Therapy Primed to Replace Blockbuster Drugs for Treating Peripheral Arterial Disease

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

A close examination ofemerging biotech Pluristem Therapeutics (PSTI), whose unique cell therapy is being applied to a number of clinical disorders, shows promise. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD), under-diagnosed and, in some cases, over-treated, is one of the fastest-growing conditions to affect an aging population. 10 million Americans have PAD today and the number is expected to rise to 23 million by 2014. Its presence signals circulatory problems that play into medicine`s largest industries - heart disease and stroke. We believe the market is ready for a new treatment, cell therapy, with lower overall cost, quicker healing time, no toxicity, and ease of administration - a simple intramuscular injection - to help improve the PAD sufferers` way of life. Several big pharmas sell drugs for PAD including Bristol-Myers Sqibb Co. (BMY) and Sanofi (SNY) which sell Plavix; Teva Pharmaceuticals (TEVA) sells Pletal; AstraZeneca (AZN) sells Atacand; Bristol-Myers also sells Avapro; and Merck & Co. (MRK) sell Cozaar/Hyzaar. Combined sales for these drugs are well over $12 billion. Each of the drugs has side effects and they do not cure PAD. As an alternative, or in addition to drugs, cevices such as stents are surgeries are costly, risky, and not consistently effective. … Continue reading

Are Drug Warning Labels Preventing Side Effects? – Video

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2012

09-07-2012 23:29 Many people ignore prescription drug warning labels according to a study published in the June 2012 issue of the Public Library of Science online journal. There are 15 million drug errors annually in the US, 2 million hospitalizations, and 400000 deaths. In a study measuring eye gaze when reading a prescription drug label in people over 50 years of age, 50% failed to notice a warning label and for 22% they did not even gaze at the area! In people between 20 and 29, 90% fixated on the warning label. Even MDs don't pay as much attention to side effects as they do to the intended effects. This is not surprising since the goal of medical treatment is usually to use a drug to prevent a symptom and the choices for treatment diminish as attention is focused on the potential complications of that drug. Direct to consumer ads are, perhaps, the worst example of how attention is focused on the benefits rather than the possible side effects, even when they are very dangerous.
