Australian Nanomedicine Conference Targets Radical Diseases

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2012

SYDNEY Researchers in Australia say microscopic robots could soon be swimming around our bloodstream repairing cells and diagnosing diseases. Drugs with improved therapeutic properties that can target affected parts of the body without damaging surrounding tissue have been the focus of an international nanomedicine conference in Australia. The conference, organized by the University of New South Wales in Sydney, has brought together academics and clinicians from 16 countries, including the United States, Britain and Australia. They have highlighted research into targeted drug delivery systems, diagnostics and regenerative therapies, all enabled by nanomedicine. It is the building of tiny machines to help combat disease. It is a field of research that works at a very small scale. A nanometer is equivalent to one-billionth of a meter or the size of a single strand of DNA. "I see enormous potential in this technology to be able to deliver drugs or deliver gene-silencing tools to target cancer-causing genes in tumor cells, so where we can load up this payload on our little trucks . . . [and] deliver specifically to the tumor cells and spare the normal cells," said Maria Kavallaris, from the Australia Center for Nanomedicine, one of the conference organizers. New cancer drug being tested in Hamilton

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2012

Hamilton area patients will soon have access to a novel drug being tested here that targets cancer and avoids the side effects of chemotherapy. A study on SOR-C13 involving about 15 patients starts next month at Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre. Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York is the only other centre with access to the drug, made in New Brunswick and derived from the saliva of a shrew. Weve been getting calls from all over the country from people who are interested in travelling to Hamilton to come on the study, said Hamilton oncologist and lead researcher Dr. Hal Hirte. It has created a lot of excitement. The buzz around the drug is that it pinpoints only cancer cells. Traditional chemotherapy is indiscriminate and also kills off healthy cells. These smart drugs are a promising area of cancer research McMaster University is already pursuing. Hamiltons Dr. Mick Bhatia recently discovered that the antipsychotic drug Thioridazine targets cancer cells and plans to start a clinical trial within a year. Most chemotherapy is pretty much a shotgun approach, so its poisonous to all cells said Jack Stewart, chairman and chief scientific officer of Soricimed Biopharma Inc., which created SOR-C13. Its why chemotherapy … Continue reading

CHC pharmacy closed on weekends

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2012

Friday, July 06, 2012 DUE TO LACK OF PHARMACIST The Commonwealth Health Center's pharmacy, one of the key areas of the public hospital, was ordered closed during weekends due to the lack of staff. Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. CEO Juan N. Babauta confirmed with Saipan Tribune yesterday that CHC pharmacy will be closed during Saturdays and Sundays until the organization fills the vacancy for a pharmacist. The closure of the hospital pharmacy started last week when in-patient pharmacist Anthony Raho went on terminal leave. Raho, who is also an elected board member of the corporation board, quit his job to join the private sector effective yesterday, July 5. Babauta said that CHC has only one pharmacist left since Raho's departure. He said the decision to temporarily close the pharmacy is to avoid the lone pharmacist from being burned out. Until a replacement for Raho is found, the weekend closure will stand. Babauta said. He, however, assured that the pharmacy will be open during weekdays. According to Babauta, the corporation is now working on the details on how a locum pharmacist can come in quickly. We're currently working on that now. In fact, we're starting to process one locum pharmacist, he told … Continue reading

New state law calls for autism coverage

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2012

A new state law took effect July 1 that requires insurance companies to pay for autism treatment, in what regulators describe as a reconfirmation of existing law. Lisa Ackerman, founder of Irvine-based Talk About Curing Autism or TACA, said the law, known as SB 946, builds upon the Mental Health Parity Law, which took effect in 2000. Andrew Ashline receives 11 hours of in-home Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy per week through Autism Spectrum Therapies (www.autismtherapies.com), a local autism therapy agency. His therapist, Kristen McMurray, is an integral part of an overall intervention program. Using the iPad during sessions has improved Andrew's ability to stay focused and communicate with others. H. LORREN AU JR., THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER ADVERTISEMENT That law said autism, as well as mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, must receive the same treatment benefits as other kinds of medical conditions. But regulators still found some insurers were denying coverage. "SB 946 is a natural next step," said Ackerman, whose son has autism. "It gives families more choices for treatment." Earlier this year, Blue Shield, Health Net and Cigna reached agreements with the state's Department of Insurance after consumer complaints about denial of coverage for a treatment known as … Continue reading

They received ten 30-minute sessions of swallowing therapy and were randomly assigned to either a treatment group or control group. The researchers fitted all patients with an electrode that was attached on the their scalp on the side of the brain affected by the stroke, as well as in the region linked to swallowing. The treatment group was administered tDCS for the first 20 minutes of their sessions, with swallowing training alone for the remaining 10 minutes, whilst those in the control group, the researchers tapered down the direct current and turned it off after thirty seconds. The scientists measured outcomes before and immediately after the experiment, and again three months later. Just … Continue reading
