Parents fight popularity of 'bath salts'

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2012

CINCINNATI - Odds are when you hear of bath salts you think of something soothing and relaxing. But don't. Instead, think of a stimulant drug like cocaine or methamphetamine; a drug growing in popularity primarily among young people. Our Scripps station in Cincinnati sat down with an area mother and daughter who battled the highly addictive drug to finally reach recovery. In order to protect the daughters identity, we will refer to her as Brianna. She loves to sing and has an angelic voice full of life, joy and rebirth. "She's got motivation again. She has a desire to do better. My daughter was also blessed with a beautiful singing voice and she's now singing again," said Roseanne, her mother. What stopped the 25-year-old's singing was a cruel and powerful drug -- deceptively labeled bath salts -- that can turn a beautiful song into the kind of devil's screech seen recently on a variety of YouTube videos from around the country. That behavior has awakened America to the new, bizarre, and often violent reality of bath salts. Brianna says it was never that bad for her, but she did spend days awake and hallucinating. "It was at the point where … Continue reading

Patient-derived stem cells could improve drug research for Parkinson's

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2012

Public release date: 4-Jul-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Daniel Stimson, NINDS nindspressteam@ninds.nih.gov 301-496-5751 NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Researchers have taken a step toward personalized medicine for Parkinson's disease, by investigating signs of the disease in patient-derived cells and testing how the cells respond to drug treatments. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health. The researchers collected skin cells from patients with genetically inherited forms of Parkinson's and reprogrammed those cells into neurons. They found that neurons derived from individuals with distinct types of Parkinson's showed common signs of distress and vulnerability in particular, abnormalities in the cellular energy factories known as mitochondria. At the same time, the cells' responses to different treatments depended on the type of Parkinson's each patient had. The results were published in Science Translational Medicine. "These findings suggest new opportunities for clinical trials of Parkinson's disease, in which cell reprogramming technology could be used to identify the patients most likely to respond to a particular intervention," said Margaret Sutherland, Ph.D., a program director at NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). A consortium of researchers conducted the study with primary funding from NINDS. The consortium … Continue reading

Experimental treatment reduces Parkinson's symptoms

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2012

NEW YORK (WABC) -- About 1 million people are living with Parkinson's disease in the U.S. and 69-year-old Bob Van Housen is one of them. He's always been active and has never been one to slow down, but Parkinson's has forced him to. Now, Bob is part of a new study, trying a unique treatment for Parkinson's and he's taken to it - hook, line and sinker. Twelve years ago, Bob was diagnosed with the disease and as it progressed his symptoms did too. Bob and his wife Carole even stopped traveling because of the disease. To relieve symptoms Bob would take a pill called Levadopa every few hours just to be able walk and talk. "Very suddenly, the medicine would stop handling the symptoms," Carole Van Housen said. About a year ago Bob enrolled in a trial at Cleveland Clinic to test a new, more consistent way to deliver a gel form of the same medication he was already using. "A tube is inserted in the stomach, but the tube ends in the small intestines where the medications, and also our food, nutrients are absorbed, anyways so the Levadopa liquid gel is pumped continuously from an outside source," Dr. … Continue reading

A*STAR Scientists Make Groundbreaking Discovery of Mechanism that Controls Obesity, Atherosclerosis and Potentially …

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2012

Obesity and atherosclerosis-related diseases account for over one-third of deaths in the Western world. Controlling these conditions remains a major challenge due to an incomplete understanding of the molecular pathways involved. Atherosclerosis, a progressive disease of the large arteries, is an underlying cause of many cardiovascular diseases. In Singapore, 10.8% of our population is obese(1) and cardiovascular disease accounted for 31.9% of all deaths(2) in 2010. Obesity and atherosclerosis are accompanied by the accumulation of lipid droplets in adipocytes (fat cells) and in foam cells respectively. Foam cells can subsequently rupture, damaging blood vessels, and contributing to further progression of atherosclerosis. The scientists discovered that Wip1 deficient mice, even when fed a high-fat diet, were resistant to obesity and atherosclerosis by preventing the accumulation of lipid droplets. This appeared to be through increased autophagy, the normal process by which the body degrades its own cellular components. They showed that the Wip1 deficient mice exhibited increased activity of ATM which decreased mTor signalling, resulting in increased autophagy. This degraded the lipid droplets and suppressed obesity and atherosclerosis. "This is the first time that Wip1-dependent regulation of ATM-mTor pathway has been linked to authophagy and cholesterol efflux thus providing an entirely new … Continue reading
