Man inadvertently spiked by date rape drug

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2012

A man may have inadvertently thwarted an attempted date rape scenario, thanks to the appeal of a free tequila shot. Nick Fone, 24, said he was out drinking in the small hours of Thursday morning when he was the unsuspecting victim of a spiked drink. "I was just chatting to these girls when a guy came along with a shot of tequila. He offered it to both of them and they both turned it down." Mr Fone said he thought it was weird that even though there were two girls, he approached them with one single shot, "it was pretty ballsy." He said although he doesn't remember what the man looked like, he recalled he was a "big guy, he had one of those green jackets on with a German flag on the shoulder and longish greasy hair." Mr Fone said when the girls declined the tequila shot he volunteered to take it, and it was given to him reluctantly. "After I had it the guy came up to me, the music was blaring and he was saying something to me, I couldn't understand what he was saying and then I finally caught it, 'Rohypnol's in there'." Mr Fone said … Continue reading

Family battles increasingly popular drug

CINCINNATI - Odds are when you hear of bath salts you think of something soothing and relaxing. But don't. Instead, think of a stimulant drug like cocaine or methamphetamine; a drug growing in popularity primarily among young people. And think about a local mother and daughter who battled this highly addictive drug to finally reach recovery. In order to protect the daughters identity, we will refer to her as Brianna. She loves to sing and has an angelic voice full of life, joy and rebirth. "She's got motivation again. She has a desire to do better. My daughter was also blessed with a beautiful singing voice and she's now singing again," said Roseanne, her mother. What stopped the 25-year-old's singing was a cruel and powerful drug -- deceptively labeled bath salts -- that can turn a beautiful song into the kind of devil's screech seen recently on a variety of YouTube videos from around the country. That behavior has awakened America to the new, bizarre, and often violent reality of bath salts. Brianna says it was never that bad for her, but she did spend days awake and hallucinating. "It was at the point where my significant other and I … Continue reading

The drugs-in-sport delusion

Lance Armstrong's seven Tour de France titles are under threat should doping charges be upheld against him. Photo: AFP Bans on performance enhancers don't make elite competition fairer. THE 2012 Tour de France starts this weekend under yet another drugs cloud. The US Anti-Doping Agency's recent announcement of ''doping'' charges against Lance Armstrong and others is no small matter. If the case is proven, it will nullify Armstrong's record seven Tour de France wins between 1999 and 2005, and reverberate much more widely through international cycling. This being an Olympic year, it amplifies the relevance of this case for world sport generally. Advertisement: Story continues below It is a good time to reflect on our current thinking about performance enhancement in sport. Most people are against performance enhancing drugs in elite sport based on the fairness and equity ideal of a level playing field, and a belief that ''doping'' is unnatural and poses a health risk. But what is the truth of performance enhancement in elite competition? Let's take the level playing field idea first. These days, elite-level sportspeople have an increasing array of performance enhancing options and technologies available - from lighter, smoother, stronger, and more aerodynamic competition clothing … Continue reading

Device at Sinai Hospital Saves Lives of Acute Stroke Patients

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2012

Newswise Baltimore, MD Sinai Hospital has begun use of a new device that provides timely live-saving treatment for acute stroke patients. The Solitaire FR revascularization device is designed to minimize damage caused by blockage of an artery to the brain by mechanically removing blood clots and restoring blood flow. Recently approved by the FDA for use in patients with acute stroke, the device is especially crucial for those who arrive in the emergency room too late for clot-dissolving drugs to be administered. The Solitaire FR represents the next generation in the endovascular treatment of acute strokes, said John C. Brunson Jr., M.D., director of Interventional Radiology/Neurointerventional Services at Sinai Hospital. This condition often leads to long-term disability problems and even death if we do not treat it in time. Many acute stroke patients have a window of only a few hours to receive interventional treatment, so every second counts. This device gives us the ability to open up blocked blood vessels more quickly than ever before. Brunson recently became the first surgeon in Maryland to use the Solitaire FR to successfully treat a patient with top of the basilar artery stroke, a rare condition that almost always results in death … Continue reading

Stroke Fellowship adds to Existing Prestige

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2012

Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability, affecting nearly 800,000 people and costing some $60 billion annually in the United States alone. Providing the best and latest in treatment of stroke is increasingly becoming a national focus, and one Peoria is at the forefront. Adding to the already vast expertise in the field of vascular neurology, the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria has received formal accreditation for a fellowship program specializing in stroke. Approval by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, or ACGME, essentially gives the existing educational and clinical structure in Peoria the gold seal. Dr. Thomas Santoro, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, called the fellowship accreditation highly prestigious, adding this fellowship is the embodiment of on-going clinical efforts to grow medical subspecialties within our community. Currently, only 67 such stroke fellowships exist nationwide which are accredited by the ACGME. About a quarter of those were created only within the last couple years. Dr. David Wang, Founder and Director of the Illinois Neurological Institutes Stroke Network at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology for the University of … Continue reading

West Roxbury nurse’s mission is to have fewer barriers to care

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2012

In 2009, 17-year-old Diovanny Teixeira suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury while living in his native Cape Verde. Because he was in need of more advanced care than what was locally available, he was issued a special visa that allowed him to come to the United States for treatment. Eventually, he and his mother Adelaide found their way to the Franciscan Hospital for Children (FHC) in Brighton, and began an intensive 10-month rehabilitation process there. What already was bound to be a grueling and stressful ordeal could have been even harder for the Teixeiras because of the language barrier. Even for a native English speaker, complicated medical terminology can be tricky, and the pair speaks Creole at home and had been conversing with doctors only in Portuguese. But luckily, FHC has an extensive interpreter services department free and available to all of their patients and families, ensuring that nothing gets lost in translation. At FHC, the patient-base is made up of more than 30 percent non-English speakers. Because they treat children of all ages, they often need to explain to parents and other family members what is happening with their child, as well as teach them how to provide ongoing … Continue reading

Brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease offers improvements

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2012

June 28, 2012 WASHINGTON, DC Patients with Parkinsons disease who undergo deep brain stimulation (DBS) a treatment in which a pacemaker-like device sends pulses to electrodes implanted in the brain can expect stable improvement in muscle symptoms for at least three years, according to a Department of Veterans Affairs study appearing in the most recent issue of the journal Neurology. VA was proud to partner with the National Institutes of Health in this research, said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. Our research on Parkinsons helps ensure we continue to provide the best care possible for veterans with this debilitating disease. VA cares for approximately 40,000 veterans with the condition. In DBS, surgeons implant electrodes in the brain and run thin wires under the skin to a pacemaker-like device placed at one of two locations in the brain. Electrical pulses from the battery-operated device jam the brain signals that cause muscle-related symptoms. Thousands of Americans have seen successful results from the procedure since it was first introduced in the late 1990s. But questions have remained about which stimulation site in the brain yields better outcomes, and over how many years the gains persist. Initial results from the study appeared … Continue reading
