Scientists strip ecstasy of dangerous effects

Posted: Published on June 15th, 2012

A decade after ecstasy was hailed for its ability to enhance treatment of Parkinson's disease, an Australian scientist has managed to modify the drug, eliminating its harmful effects. The development means the illicit drug could after all be used to reduce the side-effects of the most common treatment, levodopa. Levodopa restores movement in Parkinson's patients but also causes jerky, involuntary movements commonly associated with the disease. At the beginning of the century a former professional stuntman proved ecstasy could improve his treatment but doctors warned it had no therapeutic value because it affected users' moods and killed brain cells. University of West Australia Associate Professor Matthew Piggott said his team's research, in collaboration with experts in Toronto, had managed to dissociate the positive and negative effects of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as ecstasy. "By changing the structure of the drug we have a new compound structurally related to MDMA but ... not the other effects of MDMA that are well characterised and the reason why it's abused," Professor Piggott said. The new compound is called UWA-101 and trials on rats have shown it is unlikely to be psychoactive or toxic to brain cells. "UWA-101 is even more effective than MDMA … Continue reading

Sangamon County drug court: Both punishment and life preserver

Posted: Published on June 15th, 2012

The container of candy bars sitting by the judges bench was an indication this wasnt going to be an ordinary court session. It was drug court, a once-a-week session in Sangamon County Circuit Court that can be a last-chance life preserver for drug-dependent criminals. Sangamon County started its drug court in December 2010 with the help of a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. It joined fewer than 30 other Illinois counties with drug courts there are now 31 counties where non-violent offenders may be eligible to go through an intensive program that includes frequent drug testing, education or work requirements and regular court visits. Crimes like felony shoplifting or addiction-related forgery cases could qualify someone for drug court. First-time drug offenders don't qualify. They must have an addiction or drug dependency and a pending non-violent felony, said assistant states attorney Karen Tharp, one of the members of the drug court team. Their crimes have to be associated with drug addiction. And most of them are repeat offenders. But for this chance, theyd be going to prison, she said. The grant called for 25 participants, and the idea was to build that number slowly to see how things … Continue reading

China ... an expert says it is the No.1 source of counterfeit drugs. Photo: Louie Douvis The rapid growth of internet commerce has led to an explosion of counterfeit drugs sold around the world, with China the biggest source of fake medicines, pharmaceutical experts said Thursday. The illicit trade is now believed to be worth around $75 billion globally, with criminal gangs increasingly using the web to move their products across borders, said Scott Davis, Pfizer's top security expert for Asia. "The internet has led to an explosion of availability of these products," Davis told a health forum in Manila. Advertisement: Story continues below "About 90 per cent of counterfeit drugs ... are at some point marketed and sold on the internet." He said websites selling fake drugs commonly did not have physical addresses and exploited weak or murky customs regulations to ship their products. "They are getting more sophisticated," he said, adding that law enforcers were finding it ever more difficult to tell the fake drugs from the real. "We often have to send the pills to our labs to tell us the difference," he said. The US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer makes the anti-impotence drug Viagra, which along with … Continue reading

Could roseola virus be behind epilepsy? Childhood virus infection linked to prolonged seizures with fever

Posted: Published on June 15th, 2012

ScienceDaily (June 14, 2012) New research shows that human herpesviruses (HHV)-6B and HHV-7, commonly know as roseola virus), account for one third of febrile status epilepticus (FSE) cases. Results of the FEBSTAT prospective study now available in Epilepsia, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), suggest that HHV-6B may be involved in the development of epilepsy and further research is urgently needed. FEBSTAT is a multi-center study of the consequences of FSE, designed to identify the factors that increase the risk of injury to the hippocampus, an area of the brain responsible for long-term memory and implicated in the development of temporal lobe epilepsy. The FEBSTAT study is funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). According to previous research, up to 5% of children under the age of five have febrile seizures, making it the most common type of seizure, with peak incidence at age 2. While brief or simple febrile seizures are most common, 5% -- 8% of cases are prolonged and meet the criteria for status epilepticus (SE) -- a critical condition where a persistent seizure lasts more than 30 … Continue reading
