New Applications in Drug Discovery Platforms to Fuel Advance of Stem Cells, Says Frost & Sullivan

Posted: Published on June 14th, 2012

Ethical, Clinical and Commercial Issues to be Navigated before Full Potential of Stem Cell Therapies can be Unleashed LONDON, June 13, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Stem cells offer exciting potential in regenerative medicine, and are likely to be widely used by mid-2017. Pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies are showing increased interest in stem cell research. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.pharma.frost.com), Analysis of the Stem Cell Markets-Unlocking the New Era in Therapeutics, finds that the market will be driven by stem cell applications in drug discovery platforms and by successful academia commercial company partnership models. "The high attrition rates of potential drug candidates has piqued the interest of pharmaceutical and biotech industries in stem cell use during the drug discovery phase," notes Frost & Sullivan Consulting Analyst Vinod Jyothikumar. "Previously, animal cell lines, tumours, or genetic transformation have been the traditional platform for testing drug candidates; however, these 'abnormal' cells have significantly contributed to a lack of translation into clinical studies." Many academic institutes and research centres are collaborating with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies in stem cell research. This will provide impetus to the emergence of novel cell-based therapies. Key challenges to market development relate to reimbursement, ethics and … Continue reading

CPAP found to improve sexual function, satisfaction in men with sleep apnea

Posted: Published on June 13th, 2012

Public release date: 13-Jun-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Doug Dusik ddusik@aasmnet.org 630-737-9700 American Academy of Sleep Medicine DARIEN, IL Men who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are seeing another potential benefit from continuous positive airway pressure therapy, or CPAP: improved sexual function and satisfaction in non-diabetic men under age 60. A study out of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., assessed the erectile function and libido of 92 men who were newly diagnosed with OSA and starting CPAP therapy. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common in OSA patients, and nearly half of the men in the Walter Reed study reported the presence of ED. Patients were assessed again after one, three and six months of CPAP therapy. The results show that CPAP improved the sexual function and satisfaction in the majority of men in the study regardless of their level of erectile function reported at the very start. Those with ED had more robust improvements and even many without ED reported improved sexual function and satisfaction. "We were surprised at how prevalent ED is in a relatively young population of men with sleep apnea. The average age was 45," said Joseph Dombrowsky, MD, the … Continue reading

A Cheap Alternative to the Dollar Stores

By Eric Novinson - June 12, 2012 | Tickers: DG, DLTR, FDO, FRED | 0 Comments Eric is a member of The Motley Fool Blog Network -- entries represent the personal opinions of our bloggers and are not formally edited. Many well known discount stores are trading close to their yearly highs right now, as investors expect shoppers to pass up mid-market stores in favor of cheaper alternatives. Although this theory still seems reasonable, the rising valuations of the dollar stores have become a concern for some investors. An investor who wants to pay less of a premium for shares of a discount store might want to consider Fred's, Inc., (NASDAQ: FRED) instead. The main value investing argument for Fred's, Inc, is that its book price per share is fairly close to its market price per share. Yahoo Finance gives a book value per share of $11.56 for Fred's, and a market share price of $14.23. Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR), Dollar General (NYSE: DG), and Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO) have book values per share of $12.76, $13.82, and $10.43, respectively. At share prices of $106.72 for Dollar Tree, $50.29 for Dollar General, and $69.58 for Family Dollar, Fred's shares look … Continue reading

'.Apple,' '.auto' among Internet suffixes proposed

Posted: Published on June 13th, 2012

By ANICK JESDANUN AP Technology Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Proposals for Internet addresses ending in ".pizza," ''.space" and ".auto" are among the nearly 2,000 submitted as part of the largest expansion in the online address system. Apple Inc., Sony Corp. and American Express Co. are among companies that are seeking names with their brands. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers announced the proposals for Internet suffixes, the ".com" part of an Internet address, in London on Wednesday. There were 1,930 proposals for 1,409 different suffixes. The bulk came from North America and Europe. If approved, the new suffixes would rival ".com" and about 300 others now in use. Companies would be able to create separate websites and separate addresses for each of their products and brands, even as they keep their existing ".com" name. Businesses that joined the Internet late, and found desirable ".com" names taken, would have alternatives. From a technical standpoint, the names let Internet-connected computers know where to send email and locate websites. But they've come to mean much more. For Amazon.com Inc., for instance, the domain name is the heart of the company, not just an address. The expansion will allow suffixes that … Continue reading

Pancreatic Cancer Can Run but Not Hide from the Immune System, according to Penn Study

Posted: Published on June 13th, 2012

PHILADELPHIA A study published this week in Cancer Cell from the Perelman School of Medicine and the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania describes how pancreatic cancer cells produce a protein that attracts immune cells and tricks them into helping cancer cells grow. Blocking the protein may be also prove to be a new way to treat pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly types of cancer, mostly due to its aggressiveness and its ability to suppress the cancer-fighting properties of the immune system. Most pancreatic cancer cells contain a mutation in the KRAS gene. The Penn team looked to see how mutated KRAS proteins give pancreatic cancer its distinguishing properties. A group from New York University School of Medicine led by Dafna Bar-Sagi took a complementary approach and reported its findings in another manuscript also published this week in Cancer Cell. "Both our group and the group from NYU have discovered a critical way in which pancreatic tumor cells cripple the immune system. From very early on, tumor cells produce a molecule that drives inflammatory cells to cloak the tumor and prevent other immune cells from killing the cancer," says Penn's senior author Robert … Continue reading
