Sexual Dysfunction in Men Improved With Saw Palmetto

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2012

LONDON, June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A natural treatment made from Saw Palmetto berries can have a significant effect in reducing sexual dysfunction in men with prostate problems, a new clinical trial has found. A male libido study carried out by Swiss-based herbal specialists A. Vogel is the first using extracts from Saw Palmetto berries to show improvement not only on the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) but also the erectile and ejaculatory problems it often causes. The treatment, marketed in the UK by A. Vogel's Bioforce arm under the brand name Prostasan, was given to 82 patients, most of them aged between 50 and 70. During the eight week-trial in Switzerland they took one 320mg capsule of Saw Palmetto extract daily. At the end of the trial the 18.8 per cent suffering severe BPH symptoms had dropped to only 4.3 percent, while overall 66 percent reported enhanced erectile function and libido. Practising urologist, Dr Eugen Riedi, who organised the trial, says results clearly showed Prostasan significantly improved not only BPH but also all areas of sexual dysfunction. "That is a critical factor when it is considered one of the side-effects of frequently prescribed medication is that it may … Continue reading

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo., June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Ampio Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (AMPE), a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company, whose lead drugs treat inflammatory diseases, including osteoarthritis and complications of Diabetes Mellitus such as diabetic macular edema (and others) announced today that it's CRO has completed analysis of the primary end point in the Optina clinical trial for DME conducted at St Michael Diabetes Hospital in Toronto Canada. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120516/MM09116LOGO) Dr. David Bar-Or, Ampio's Chief Science Officer (CSO), explained "The primary end point for efficacy was central subfield retinal thickness as measured by Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and reported in microns. The study was double masked and included 32 patients with moderate to severe diabetic macular edema (range 316-707microns) that were treated orally with either placebo or one of three doses of Optina. Central retinal thickness and retinal volumes were measured at baseline and at 4 and 12 weeks of treatment. The results confirm a significant interaction between the patient's body mass index (BMI) and efficacy at the different doses of Optina. For higher BMI (BMI=35) patients, higher doses of Optina were more effective and for lower BMI (BMI=26) patients, lower doses were more effective. The improvement of efficacy by adjusting the dose … Continue reading

Nanotechnologists develop a 'time bomb' to fight cardiovascular disease

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2012

Atherosclerosis, resulting in a narrowing of the arteries and the development of cardiovascular disease, is the leading cause of death worldwide. Until now, no treatment could target diseased areas exclusively, in order to increase drug efficacy and reduce side effects. To help bridge this gap, a group of Swiss researchers from UNIGE, HUG and the University of Basel have developed a veritable 'time bomb,' a treatment that can recognize the diseased areas and treat only them. In Switzerland, more than 20,000 people (37% of all deaths) die of cardiovascular disease caused by atherosclerosis each year. Treatment options are currently available to people who suffer from the disease but no drug can target solely the diseased areas, often leading to generalized side effects. Intravenous injection of a vasodilator (a substance that dilates blood vessels), such as nitroglycerin, dilates both the diseased vessels and the rest of our arteries. Blood pressure can thus drop, which would limit the desired increased blood flow generated by vasodilatation of diseased vessels and needed for example during a heart attack. In order to increase the effectiveness of treatments against atherosclerosis and to reduce side effects, a team of researchers from UNIGE, HUG and the University of … Continue reading

Staying Away From The First Use

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2012

CEBU, Philippines - Expressions most commonly heard in recovery are "If you don't take that first drink/drug, you can't get drunk/high" and "One drink is too many, and a thousand is nevert enough." Many of us when we first began to drink or drug never wanted to, or took more, than one or two drinks/hits. But as time went on, we increased the number. Then, in later years, we found ourselves drinking and using more and more, some of us getting and staying very drunk/high. Maybe our condition didn't always show in our speech or our movements, but by this time we were never actually clean and sober. If that bothered us too much, we would cut down, or try to limit ourselves to just one or two, or switch from hard liquor to beer or wine (or from Shabu to just marijuana). At least, we tried to limit the amount, so we would not get too disastrously high. Or we tried to hide how much we drank or used. But all these measures got more and more difficult. Occasionally, we even went on the wagon, and did not drink and/or use at all for a while. Eventually, we would … Continue reading

Experimental diabetes drugs offer patients hope

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2012

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Some experimental diabetes treatments in late testing offer patients hope of better controlling their blood sugar and weight and preventing dangerously low blood sugar, all big challenges for millions of diabetics. Results from studies of several new diabetes medicines and insulin products, just announced at the premiere U.S. conference for diabetes specialists, likewise hold the promise of billions in annual revenue for drugmakers that have dominated the diabetes market and for others breaking into it. They have been presenting their data at the American Diabetes Association conference, held in Philadelphia from last Friday through Monday. Until the last decade, relatively few companies made treatments for diabetes, a chronic condition in which the body either does not make enough insulin to break down the sugar in foods or uses insulin inefficiently. Now many more drugmakers have jumped in, as the number of American diabetes patients is about 26 million and growing fast, and there are tens of millions more in Western Europe, China and India. That's because the global obesity epidemic has caused a similar explosion of diabetes cases. About 95 percent are Type 2 diabetes, usually related to being overweight and sedentary. Type 2, once called … Continue reading

Synthetic drugs reach Lynn area

She reported experiencing a major, major headache and heart palpitations after she was taken to the emergency room, OConnor said. We have a little girl who is scared for her life, who gave it to her grandmother who reported it, she said of the so-called synthetic drugs that are showing up in Lynn. She said she found it at a gas station. OConnor said synthetic drugs and the trendy designer drug bath salts, pose a danger to kids and teens who might not realize just how serious the drugs are. While the substances sold as fake pot may resemble marijuana and are marketed as a legal alternative, OConnor said there is nothing natural about them. Kids think theyre getting legal pot and what theyre really getting is a banned substance thats chemical, she said. The effects are much more dangerous, and you dont know what it will do it depends on the person. The problem has been … Continue reading

Computers may predict drugs? side effects

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2012

Scientists at a biomedical research laboratory in Cambridge have developed a computer model to test drugs for adverse side effects before they would be given to people in clinical trials. If proven successful, such an approach could be a significant step toward solving a major problem facing the pharmaceutical industry. Adverse drug reactions are a costly liability, causing about 20 percent of drugs in clinical development to fail, according to the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development. The ability to detect them early in the development process could spare patients harmful reactions and save the time and expense of launching clinical trials on drugs that carry problematic side effects. Already, companies test drug candidates in animals and in the lab to minimize the possibility that drugs with toxic effects are tested in people. But those offer only a limited way to mimic how a drug will act in humans, so crafting tests that could flag molecules likely to have side effects has become been a priority. I think this is an extremely powerful tool, said Kenneth Kaitin, director of the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development, who was not involved in the study. One of the … Continue reading
