Pharmacy owner admits to fraud

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2012

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The former owner of a West Lafayette pharmacy admits to defrauding Medicaid out of more than 3.5 million dollars, but he will avoid jail time. The old Family Pharmacare has been completely cleaned out with a for lease sign in the window. Back in November, federal agents raided the pharmacy, taking away a number of boxes as evidence. Shedron pleaded guilty to defrauding Medicaid out of more than 3.5 million dollars and income tax evasion to the tune of a half million dollars. If convicted, the charges could have meant up to 15 years in prison. Last week, a judge accepted the plea, whereby Shedron will avoid jail time. Shedron's punishment is three- fold. First., he will never be able open a pharmacy like this one that provided federal health benefits. Second, he has to pay back 3.5 million in fraudulent billing. As part of that, he had to sell more than a dozen pieces of jewelry and his extensive baseball card collection, worth more than $215,000 and includes cards like an $11,000 Mickey Mantle Card and other greats like Cy Young, Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson. Saskatchewan-funded MS trial will proceed

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2012

Patients who underwent the so-called liberation treatment for multiple sclerosis experienced no measurable benefit from the procedure, a study commissioned by the government of Newfoundland and Labrador found. The results of the small, observational study were announced in St. John's by lead investigator Dr. William Pryse-Phillips, a professor emeritus of neurology at Newfoundland's Memorial University. Pryse-Phillips said he had gone into the study hopeful the treatment might have something to offer his MS patients, but completed it convinced the people who had the vein-opening procedure didn't experience any gains. "I am disappointed. I had hoped. I cannot recommend this therapy on the basis of these results at this time," he said during a news conference on Wednesday, the video of which is posted on the Department of Health and Community Service's website. The province spent $400,000 on the study, which compared 30 patients with MS who had travelled outside the province to have the therapy and 10 who did not. Participants were subjected to an array of tests before the treatment and then at intervals of one month, three months, six months and one year post-procedure. Saskatchewan's government is spending $2.2 million to help fund an Albany, N.Y.-based clinical trial … Continue reading

Research and Markets: What Everybody Ought To Know About Embryonic Stem Cell Product Development

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2012

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/5f455z/errorproof_entry) has announced the addition of the "Error-Proof Entry, Expert Positioning, and Exploding Growth in Embryonic Stem Cell Products" report to their offering. Companies interested in developing human embryonic stem cell products have to navigate a risky product environment. Due to the long-standing and controversial patents held by the University of Wisconsins Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), companies have been largely hindered by the intellectual property (IP) environment restricting the development of embryonic stem cell products. However, going where competitors fear to tread means tremendous financial rewards are available for the companies that move boldly forward. Human embryonic stem cells offer tremendous therapeutic potential, as they can develop into over 200 different cell types. However, up until now, WARF has had the power to largely control what companies can develop embryonic stem cell products and on what terms. With the release of BioInformants report Error-Proof Entry, Expert Positioning, and Exploding Growth in Embryonic Stem Cell Products, published June 2012, research supply companies can now receive clear guidance for navigating the hazards of embryonic stem cell product development. The report reveals critical alternatives to traditional WARF licensing, such as moving research overseas, establishing collaborations with companies that … Continue reading

Genetic testing doesn’t drive up demand for more health services

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2012

Patients who have genetic testing done to detect their risk for multiple health conditions do not use more health services after testing than those who elect not to be checked, says a study published online May 17 in Genetics in Medicine. Genetic tests increasingly are being marketed directly to patients, raising concerns among some physicians that they could cause a spike in patients requesting unnecessary screening and procedures, said Robert J. Reid, MD, PhD, lead study author and associate investigator with Group Health Research Institute in Seattle. Certainly, there is a lot of concern in the country that doing indiscriminate testing of individuals around their genetic susceptibility will alarm them and increase demand, he said. Researchers studied 1,599 insured patients between age 25 and 40 from the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. Of those, 217 opted to get genetic tests. Patients who received the tests had more specialty physician visits before the checks than the untested group, but the study found no change in overall use of health care services among those who had the evaluations done and those who did not (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22595941/). Researchers analyzed health care usage by participants for 12 months before and 12 months after genetic … Continue reading
