Malta opposing EU financing for stem cell research on embryos

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2012

Stem cell therapy may one day be used to cure disorders such as Fragile-X syndrome, or Cystic fibrosis and other genetic maladies. Matthew Vella The Maltese government wants the European Commission to abandon plans to provide funds for research activities on stem cells that involve "the destruction of human embryos". In a declaration on the ethical principles for the Horizon 2020 programme, which is an 80 billion fund for the EU's programme for research and innovation to create new jobs, the Maltese government said it wanted more detailed guidelines on the bioethical principles that will guide research programmes. Horizon 2020 will allow the financing of research on human stem cells - both adult and embryonic - as long as it is permitted by the national laws of member states. The fund however will not finance human cloning, genetic modification, or the creation of human embryos intended for the purpose of research or stem cell procurement. The European Commission does not explicitly solicit the use of human embryonic stem cells, but Horizon 2020 allows the use of human stem cells according to the objectives of the research, and only if it has the necessary approvals from the member states. The Maltese … Continue reading

For Juvenile Arthritis, Pill May Work as Well as Needle

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2012

THURSDAY, May 31 (HealthDay News) -- Taking the arthritis drug methotrexate in pill form was just as effective as receiving it by injection for the long-term treatment of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, a new study has found. Since both methods also have a similar incidence of side effects, researchers said the findings suggest that children may as well take the medication as a pill instead of having to put up with the discomfort of injections. They noted, however, that their study looked back at registry information on kids with arthritis. More research -- including controlled clinical trials, the gold standard of research -- is needed before making a treatment recommendation. The study, published May 30 in the journal Arthritis Care & Research, was funded by drug maker Wyeth BioPharma. Methotrexate (brand name Rheumatrex) is one of the most common first-line disease-modifying antirheumatic drug treatments for arthritis. In this study, German researchers compared more than 150 patients who received methotrexate injections and more than 250 patients who took the drug orally. The male and female patients, who had a median age of 10, all received comparable doses. After six months of treatment, nearly three-quarters of patients -- including 73 percent … Continue reading

Police seek community's help in meth fight

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2012

While significant progress has taken place on lab seizures in the past 15 years, methamphetamine is still primarily the drug of choice in Independence, and law enforcement officials say they need the communitys help in fighting back. Independence is continuing its role in a metrowide effort to curb meth manufacturing and distribution. Local police officials can easily state the statistic that Independence had seven total meth lab seizures in 2011. Those lab busts were actually on a smaller scale shake-and-bake operations using soft drink bottles. This year, to date, just one lab has been seized, and no meth was recovered in that bust. But the statistics that arent readily available are how many people in Independence remain addicted to meth, a drug known for its strong triggering of dependency. On the possession side, its estimated that in 2011, Independence police encountered about 170 cases in which someone possessed meth or meth-related paraphernalia. So, despite efforts to end production in Independence, meth possession is relatively consistent, said Capt. Paul Thurman, an 18-year veteran of the Independence Police Department who oversees the Drug Enforcement Unit. Its an absolute concern, he said. Our possession cases, while still quite high, have stabilized for probably … Continue reading

Alcohol, drugs a factor in killing spree?

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2012

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash., June 2 (UPI) -- Military prosecutors said Friday saying Staff Sgt. Robert Bales had been drinking and taking steroids before a killing spree in Afghanistan. In a new charge sheet, prosecutors say Bales killed 16 people, not 17, as initially reported, the Los Angeles Times said. Prosecutors say one of the victims was double-counted when the number was given as 17. Prosecutors did not say Bales acted under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The charge sheet says he violated military law by their use while he was at an outpost near the town of Belambay. Bales faces 16 counts of murder, six of attempted murder and six of assault in the March 11 incident. He faces another assault charge for allegedly beating an Afghan man in February. A defense lawyer said Friday that Bales did not have a drinking problem. "He was not an alcoholic," Emma Scanlan said. "The allegation that he may have used a limited amount of alcohol does not mean that alcohol fueled some kind of homicidal rage."
